Ancient coins have been found in North America over the years, Roman coins for example, and as far as I know they have all been deemed as losses by collectors, sometimes losses dating from the 18th century. These coins may be more of the same but then maybe not.

Coins from the British East India Company were found mixed in with the older African ones. This suggests that while some of the coins had been minted a thousand years ago, their arrival on the island was far more recent.
