Clearly this guy is an idiot.
As with other fruits, bananas provide numerous nutritional benefits when consumed in moderation. However, there are potential health risks associated with consuming too many bananas, especially if you do so in a short time. The overall composition of your diet and your personal nutritional needs and goals will also affect how bad a large intake of bananas will be for you.
High Sugar Content
Bananas are often recommended as a good food for providing energy because they are rich in carbohydrates, particularly sugar. While sugar can increase feelings of energy, it also has drawbacks, such as tooth decay. As the "Journal of the American Dental Association" explains, sugar produces an acid when it comes into contact with the plaque coating your teeth. This acid eats away at the surface of your teeth, promoting tooth decay.
High Potassium Content
Bananas are rich in potassium; one banana provides 487 mg, or about 25 percent of the daily recommended intake of this nutrient. While potassium is essential, consuming too many bananas can put you at risk for hyperkalemia, or an excess of potassium. Too much potassium can lead to diarrhea, nausea, loss of strength and abnormal heart rhythm. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the risk of hyperkalemia increases as you age, as your kidneys become less effective at eliminating potassium.
Lack of Fat
Bananas contain virtually no fat, so if you're eating so many bananas that you're not leaving room in your diet for fat-containing foods, this can be problematic. Dietary fat is essential because it aids in proper brain function, healthy growth and development, and provides energy and helps your body to absorb certain vitamins.
Lack of Protein
Bananas are very low in protein, with about 1 g per banana. As with dietary fat, protein is an essential nutrient that you need to consume daily. Protein builds and repairs your body's tissues, and loss of muscle mass and impaired immunity can result from inadequate intake. Additionally, research from the March 2011 edition of "Nutrition & Metabolism" indicates that eating a diet with a high carbohydrate to protein ratio -- similar to the nutritional profile of bananas -- results in decreased muscle gain and increased fat storage.
