Was hoping to have a discussion about faith v religion with mention of the Big Man in the Sky or the Holy Book ...
Then why mention religion? You can't debate the issues then leave a major part of them out.

How did you?
or how is it defined?

Name all the religions that don't have a deity... a focus... something to have FAITH in.
I don't see how you can realistically avoid it.

World English Dictionary
religion (rɪˈlɪdʒən) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]— n
1. belief in, worship of, or obedience to a supernatural power or powers considered to be divine or to have control of human destiny
2. any formal or institutionalized expression of such belief: the Christian religion
3. the attitude and feeling of one who believes in a transcendent controlling power or powers

Why make assumption that one must have faith "in" something rather than just having faith? Steve Jobs had tremendous faith to accomplish what he did. Was it faith "in" something or was it just faith. I suspect the later.

Faith or self-belief/self-confidence?
Aren't they different things?
