Tennis umpire Carlos Ramos

Perfect Umpiring
The US Open final devolved into farce after Serena Williams took odds with the umpire's treatment of her.

It took sheen away from 20-year-old Naomi Osaka beating her idol to claim hers and Japan's first major title, but there were a lot of moving parts.

So, what the hell happened?

First violation: Coaching (warning)
From the other side of the net, Serena Williams is seen throwing her hand in the air in a shrug.
Having already lost the first set 6-2, Williams was warned for receiving coaching from her box after the first game of the second set.

There are rules around on-court coaching in professional tennis, but they're often broken without any penalty.
Coach Patrick Mouratoglou later admitted to ESPN he "was 100 per cent coaching", but Williams was indignant, telling umpire Carlos Ramos that Mouratoglou had only given her a thumbs up and that was not some secret code.

"I know you don't know that and I understand why you thought that was coaching but I'm telling you it's not," she said.

"I don't cheat to win, I'd rather lose. I'm just letting you know."

Compared to what was to come, that was pretty chilled out.

Second violation: Racquet abuse (point penalty)
Serena Williams' broken racquet lies on the ground under her racquet bag on her on-court seat.
While leading 3-2 in the second set, Williams was surprised to hear she was starting the game down 15-0 after receiving a second code violation for smashing her racquet.

She had been docked a point by Ramos in accordance with the International Tennis Federation's penalty schedule, which says the first code violation is a warning and the second is a point penalty.

2018 final vs Naomi Osaka: Receives three code violations — coaching, racquet abuse, verbal abuse — in the second set, losing a point then a game. She says this wouldn't have happened if she was a man. Loses 6-2, 6-4.
The same thing happened to her the during the 2009 US Open semifinal against Kim Clijsters, when she had been warned for smashing a racquet and then penalised a point (which happened to be match point) for threatening a lineswoman who foot-faulted her.

This time, Williams seemed confused as Ramos explained the situation.

"This is unbelievable. Every time I play here I have problems," she said.

"What? That's a warning. I didn't get coaching. I didn't get coaching. I didn't get coaching. You need to make an announcement that I didn't get coaching.

"I don't cheat. I didn't get coaching. How can you say that? You need to … you owe me an apology. You owe me an apology. I have NEVER cheated in my life!

"I have a daughter and I stand for what's right for her and I never cheated. You owe me an apology. You will never do another one of my matches!"

OK. Whoa. But it's probably over, right?

Third violation: Verbal abuse (game penalty)
While Osaka was preparing to serve with a 4-3 lead, Williams resumed her attack on Ramos from her chair.

"I explained that [I wasn't getting coaching] to you and for you to attack my character … it's wrong. You're attacking my character. Yes, you are," she said.

"You owe me an apology. You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar.

"When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it, say you're sorry."

No apology was forthcoming.
"Well then don't talk to me. Don't talk to me," she said.

"You stole a point from me, you're a thief too."

As ridiculous as it sounds, this is when things got really ugly.

"Code violation. Verbal abuse. Game penalty, Mrs Williams," came the announcement from Ramos.

Williams laughed but she clearly wasn't seeing the funny side.

Naomi Osaka walks away covering her face as Serena Williams argues with chair umpire Carlos Ramos.
"Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Because I said you're a thief? Because you stole a point from me," she said.

"But I'm not a cheater. But I told you to apologise to me. This is out … Excuse me, I need the referee."

'Because I'm a woman, you're gonna take this away from me?'
Serena Williams speaks to Donna Kelso on court while chair umpire Carlos Ramos speaks to Brian Earley at the US Open.
Enter tournament director Brian Earley and WTA supervisor Donna Kelso.

While Earley spoke to Ramos, Williams was almost in tears as she defended herself to Kelso.

"This is not right. This is not right. I mean, I called him a thief because he stole a point from me because I never cheated," she said.

"He said I was being coached and I wasn't being coached. That's not right. That is not right. You know me, you know my character and that's not right. This is not fair.

"This has happened to me too many times. This is not fair. This is not fair. To lose a game for saying that is not fair. It's really not."

Then to Earley.
"You know how many other men do things that are … much worse than that. This is not fair," she said.

"There's a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things and because they are men, that doesn't happen to them."

Earley explained that she knew the risk she was taking by abusing the umpire after having already received two violations.

"No, I don't know the risk because if I say a simple thing — a thief because he stole a point from me — that does not make … there are men out here that do a lot worse," she said.

"But because I'm a woman, because I'm a woman, you're gonna take this away from me? That is not right.

"You know it, and I know you can't admit it, but I know you know it's not right. I know you can't change it but I'm just saying that's not right.

"I get the rules, I get the rules but I'm just saying it's not right. And it happened to me at this tournament every single year that I play. It's just not fair. That's all I have to say. That's not fair."

Williams powered through her next service game, winning to love, before Osaka showed remarkable composure to serve out the match.

The fury bled into the crowd, which booed during the trophy presentation. Williams called for calm and put her arm around a distraught Osaka, but the damage was done.

She should feel bad for denying her opponent her chance of a lifetime, to legitimately beat her without this farcical display finishing it prematurely.
"But you will run your fluffy bunny mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."

It was yet another poor show from the egotistical drama queen, she always acts up when losing.
Naomi will have to find someone else to look up to.

She should hook up with Nick Kyrgios.

Re tantrums ...
“The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women and is committed to working with the sport to ensure that all players are treated the same. We do not believe that this was done last night,” CEO Steve Simon said in a statement.

ITF backs US Open chair umpire over Serena meltdown
11 September 2018 — 8:01am

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has given its backing to Portuguese chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who Serena Williams branded a "liar" and a "thief" during her US Open final defeat by Japan's Naomi Osaka on Saturday.

Williams, who was seeking a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title, was given a warning for a coaching violation before incurring a point penalty for smashing her racquet. After accusing Ramos of being "a thief for stealing a point from me", she was then docked a game.

The six-times US Open champion, Williams eventually lost the match 6-2 6-4 and was fined $US17,000 ($23,900) by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for her outburst.

"Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis. Mr Ramos' decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were reaffirmed by the US Open's decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offences," the ITF said in a statement.

Ramos, 47, is the only active tennis umpire to have officiated the men's singles finals at all four grand slams.

He has also been in the chair for the women's singles finals at three of the four majors - the French Open in 2005, Wimbledon in 2008 and at Flushing Meadows on Saturday.

He received praise from the ITF for his professionalism in one of the most controversial grand slam finals of all time.

"It is understandable that this high-profile and regrettable incident should provoke debate," the ITF added.

"At the same time, it is important to remember that Mr Ramos undertook his duties as an official according to the relevant rule book and acted at all times with professionalism and integrity."

The ITF's support for Ramos comes after the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) expressed disappointment over the handling of the match and the USTA's plans to review its communication policies after a string of umpiring controversies.

Williams' behaviour in the final has divided the fraternity.

Tennis great Billie Jean King backed the American but Margaret Court, whose major wins record Williams was trying to equal on Saturday, expressed little sympathy for the 36-year-old.

CARLOS Ramos, the tennis official at the centre of the Serena Williams sexism storm, has defended his actions in the US Open final.

The experienced Portuguese official found himself at the centre of a storm after his officiating of the match between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, which saw Williams accuse him of sexism after she was docked a game for receiving three code violations.

First she was warned after her coach Patrick Mouratoglou was seen communicating with her via a hand gesture and then she was docked a point after smashing her racket.

The 36-year-old, who was chasing a record-equalling 24th grand slam title, received further punishment after verbally abusing the umpire, calling him a “thief” and a “liar” in a heated exchange that went on for some time.

After Ramos had to be escorted off court, Williams used her post-match press conference to suggest that men avoid such punishment for similar on-court behaviour.

But speaking to Tribuna Expresso in his native country, Ramos indicated he was at peace with his decisions because he didn’t pick and choose when to apply the rule book.

“I’m fine, given the circumstances,” he said. “It’s a delicate situation, but a la carte arbitration does not exist. Do not worry about me!”

If Ramos is public enemy number one in the United States after his clash with Williams, the Yanks are going to have to get used to him.

Ramos will return to the umpire’s chair for this weekend’s Davis Cup clash between the US and Croatia in a somewhat curious appointment.

US Tennis Association head Katrina Adams can’t be thrilled about facing Ramos so soon after siding with Williams in the wake of the match.

“We watch the guys do this all the time, they’re badgering the umpire on the changeovers. Nothing happens. There’s no equality,” Adams told ESPN. “There has to be some consistency across the board. These are conversations that will be imposed in the next weeks.”

Ramos was supported — albeit belatedly — by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), who said he acted with “professionalism and integrity” while the Women’s Tennis Association had earlier backed Williams’ claims that she received unfair treatment.

But the ITF have further shown their support by putting Ramos in charge of the Davis Cup semi-final, which will be played this weekend in Zadar.

It comes after a source told The Times some umpires are considering refusing to officiate matches involving Williams in the wake of her attack on Ramos.

Ramos, 47, was “thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job and was not willing to be abused for it,” one anonymous umpire told the English paper.

Australian former umpire Richard Ings also reported feelings of unrest. “The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA,” Ings told ESPN.com.

“They are all fearful that they could be the next Ramos. They feel that no one has their back when they have to make unpopular calls.

The Women’s Tennis Association have acted badly in speaking out against a referee that rightly applied the laws.
