Commonwealth Games

Post by Neferti » Tue Jul 08, 2014 8:33 pm

You must know that the Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow later this month. The media is having a field day with the "uniforms" that the Scots -v- the Aussies.

Actually, I thought it was all about COMPETING and nothing to do with the "uniform" they have to wear at the Opening Ceremony.

Ah well. Most people won't even know that the Commonwealth Games is on. I have friends in Scotland who claim that they will "only watch the sailing" ...... :rofl :rofl

Both team uniforms are a fail.

I have to agree. I don't like any of the uniforms pictured. Big fail.

Australia's uniforms for both the Olympics and Commonwealth Games are usually pathetic. God knows why we have to dress our sportspeople like some sort of advertisement for Green and Gold Hicksville. Just decent style in the Aussie colours would suit, just fine.

Obviously, Glasgow wants to accentuate their Scottishness and I have no idea which Tartan the designers used ..... probably nothing to do with real Clans.

Still, I will be watching the Glasgow Games. I at least understand some of the rules of the sports, unlike "footy" where I have no idea.

We went to the commonwealth games 8 years ago in the UK (think it was 8 years). My wife played high level netball and it was great to watch the finals and see us beat the Kiwis by one goal. Yeah.....

Went to some events during the Olympics in London. What an event....

No-one gives a shit about the commonwealth games really.

Good practice in between the Olympics though.

I like the Commonwealth Games. There are 170+ Commonwealth countries, so plenty of competition .... just no Yanks. :rofl

Canberra has the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) as you would know and taxpayer dollars goes into that so we should expect some Gold Medals! Just not the awful uniforms they create.

Truly pathetic, colours and design... both countries.

.... and here is the reason. You get what you pay for and they paid a uniform designer to come up with it.

Well I hope they got it at bargain prices.
The company behind the design Australian Defence Apparel has a background in designing combat gear for Australian defence troops and has stepped into uncharted territory with the new Commonwealth Games outfit. Speaking to MailOnline, Brown said while the athletes look nice, it has nothing to do with the uniform.

'It's interesting, you have light colours, shoes and short skirts yet there's this extreme cold weather ... it's a bit contradictory,' she told MailOnline. 'There's a lot going on, I think it's really quite overworked ... how are those girls meant to wear those short skirts in freezing temperatures?'

But Walters said the uniform's 'brief' has been stuck too and the athletes approve. 'Obviously we have talked to other people from a design point of view, but you can't please everyone.'

Walters, who started at ADA as a pattern maker before moving into design roles, headed up the design team for ADA which has a background predominantly designing defence, fire and emergency services, and law enforcement uniforms.

I always thought the SS had smart uniforms. Clearly Hugo Boss needs to be resurrected to help this design company.

Don't understand why uniforms for these kind of events, including the World Cup and Olympics, don't reflect the national flag. Of course, having a uniform that does reflect the flag doesn't guarantee a good uniform even if they were designed by Ralph Lauren:

The entire Ralph Lauren Olympic uniform collection is available for sale, of course. The Olympics and the World Cup (and all professional sports) are all about making the rich even richer while making the sports fan think he is part of the experience. Call me a cynic but I think World Cup soccer fans who buy the uniforms and towels and all the other crap are suckers. Same goes for all the fucktard American sports fans shouting "We're #1!" at baseball, football and basketball games. "We?" The billionaire owners of these teams are laughing all the way to the bank.

Is anyone watching the Glasgow Games? I have a Scottish friend who lives on the Isle of Bute ( a Ferry ride across to Glasgow) and she states that she will only watch certain "sports" (archery and something or other else). My ancestry is Scottish but other than that ........... and since they arrived here in 1852 ... I am an Aussie. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi.
