A leaked dossier revealing the extent of human rights abuses against minorities by the Chinese Communist Party has been described as the most significant and damning trove of documents to come out of China since the Tiananmen Papers.
"Chillingly bureaucratic" is how The New York Times described the Chinese government's correspondence to officials in the country's north west, detailing how to deal with the vexed issue of university students returning home for the holidays to find their families had vanished.
It is now believed at least one million Uighurs and members of other Muslim minority groups are being held in detention camps, ostensibly for "re-education" purposes.
"Returning students from other parts of China have widespread social ties across the entire country," the leaked directive notes.
"The moment they issue incorrect opinions on WeChat, Weibo and other social media platforms, the impact is widespread and difficult to eradicate."
Students were to be advised their parents had been "infected" by the "virus of Islamic radicalism" had had to be "quarantined and cured".
How long the cure might take would be largely dependent on how the student behaved upon receiving the information.
More than 400 pages of internal Chinese government documents leaked to The New York Times and published on Saturday reveal a direct link to President Xi Jinping in the mass incarceration of ethnic minorities in China's north-west province of Xinjiang.
In September, drone footage of hundreds of Uighur prisoners, blindfolded and shackled with their heads shaved, emerged from the area, with the video's authenticity verified by multiple independent sources.
It is believed the crackdown began after Uighur militants went on a stabbing rampage at a Xinjiang railway station in 2014, killing 31 people.
Included in the leaked papers are a series of internal speeches Xi gave to local Xinjiang officials in the aftermath of the attack.
In the speeches, the president calls for "showing absolutely no mercy" towards the Uighur people and using the "organs of dictatorship" to combat separatism.
On Sunday, Foreign Minister Marise Payne described The New York Times' revelations as "disturbing" and said the Australian Government would continue to raise concerns over China's abuse of human rights with Beijing.
In October, a speech given by Payne, in which she specifically mentioned the plight of the Uighur people, prompted a formal censure from Beijing.
"Such ill-advised remarks will not help to improve or grow relations with China," a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry said on October 31.
"We have lodged stern representations to the Australian side and pointed out the inappropriate nature of her conduct."
Labor's foreign affairs spokeswoman Senator Penny Wong said Beijing "must respond to the report transparently and swiftly".
China's Foreign Ministry has yet to respond to the international outrage caused by the latest revelations.

At least the Chinese know how to deal with muzzos
Put them in a he'll hole and re-educate them,
To death if necessary.
I'm glad at least one country knows how to deal with the cult of death.
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

Just a quick note.
About 5 years ago I was in China when some members of the cult of death went on a stabbing rampage in a railway station in a seriously flawed attempt to introduce terrorism into China.
It didn't take police or the army to stop these morons
The Chinese people ran them down and held them until the military arrived.
What ensued was the most effective terrorism control I have ever witnessed.
Every muzzo was rounded up, every single one.
And on the train were arrested on the spot, no argument, simply led away.
I watched as two tried to run, muzzo modus operandi, they didn't get far, blocked by the Chinese citizens.
Every muzzo was gone, in less than a few days.
No announcements, no policing action, no protests, they were simply arrested and taken away.
Imagine just how effective that could be in Australia.
One terrorist attack, arrest the lot for re-education.
Bingo, no more terrorists.
I felt safer in China than in any other country on earth
If you behave yourself, you have nothing to fear.
Just as it should be.
But if you do wrong, you will certainly know about it pretty soon.
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

I know a few people who have worked in China for short periods and they absolutely detested it. I don't want their communism and barbaric ways here. It's not only Muslims they "re-educate".

Until you have been there and experienced it for yourself, don't be too quick to judge.
Yes they come down hard if you do the wrong thing, but behave yourself and you have no problems.
And even Australia is not the perfect place.
The cops are corrupt, the courts are corrupt, the politicians And public servants are corrupt.
In Australia you are tricked, forced or coerced into paying fines for every damn thing they can think of just so they can cash in on you.
I have been all over the world, and while far from perfect, China is one of my favourite countries.
