Pacific Climate Change Forum 2019

Post by Black Orchid » Fri Aug 16, 2019 1:52 pm

Pacific island nations need to remember they are receiving coal-powered Chinese loans, New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister has warned as he launched a defence of Australia.

Winston Peters called on Pacific nations to act with consistency and integrity in their approach to climate change amid their criticisms of Australia's policies.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is facing growing pressure at a forum in Tuvalu from Pacific leaders who want Australia to make a greater commitment to phasing out coal-fired power generation.

But Mr Peters said the nations pushing for Australia to change had to account for the money they received from China.

"There are many Pacific countries that are seeking loans, cheap loans from China," he said.

"Now those loans are on the backs of coal-fired everything in mainland China as we well know.

"There's a big picture we have to contemplate here and we've got to ensure … that we act with consistency and integrity."

Smaller Pacific nations are hoping they can take a strong statement from the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to the United Nation's Climate Action Forum in New York next month to encourage global leaders to do more to tackle climate change.

Radio host Alan Jones renewed his attack on Jacinda Ardern this morning, calling the New Zealand Prime Minister “gormless” and a “hypocrite”.

“Jacinda Ardern has no idea what she’s talking about,” Jones said on his 2GB program, accusing Ms Ardern of “duplicitously” excluding the agriculture sector from New Zealand’s pledge to become carbon neutral by 2050.

“Someone’s got to tell this woman to keep quiet, put a sock in it.

“It’s a metaphorical way of saying ‘shut up’. I wish she would shut up. I don’t know how New Zealanders handle this.”

He also spoke to the New Zealand radio station Newstalk ZB.

“It’s easy to run around the world, smile at people and look good and hug people and all the rest of it,” Jones told the station’s Kiwi audience.

“At home, people vote for a particular reason. They want things to be done. And in your country and our country, they’re not being done.”

Jones was slammed yesterday after labelling Ms Ardern a “complete clown” and urging Australian Prime Minister to “shove a sock down her throat”.

He was responding to Ms Ardern’s assertion that Australia would have to “answer to” other Pacific nations unless it stepped up its efforts to combat climate change.

“Here she is preaching on global warming and saying that we’ve got to do something about climate change,” Jones said.

The fact is New Zealand’s carbon dioxide has grown by 10.8 per cent per capita since 1990. Ours has grown by 1.8 per cent.

“I just wonder whether Scott Morrison is going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat.

“She is a joke, this woman, an absolute and utter lightweight.

“These people are an absolute joke and Jacinda Ardern is the biggest joke.”

Mr Morrison briefly addressed Jones’ comments after emerging from a 12-hour meeting with other Pacific leaders on Thursday afternoon, saying he was “disappointed” and they were “way out of line”.

“The comment has been relayed to me; on what’s been reported to me, I find that very disappointing and of course that’s way out of line,” the Prime Minister said.

“I have two daughters, so you can expect that’s how I would feel personally about it. I’ll leave others to explain what they’ve said and how they’ve said it.”

Mr Morrison’s predecessor Malcolm Turnbull said Jones should apologise for “his misogynistic rant”.

Ms Ardern herself declined to comment.

“I don’t think I will give that comment the light of day. I think I’ll just leave it where it is,” she told reporters in Tuvalu.

In a statement yesterday afternoon, Jones claimed he had been “wilfully misinterpreted”.

“Of course what I meant to say was that Scott Morrison should tell Ms Ardern to ‘put a sock in it’,” he said.

“There are many people who would relish the opportunity to misinterpret things that I have said as we have seen online this afternoon. Of course I would not wish any harm to Jacinda Ardern.

“This wilful misinterpretation distracts from my point that she was wrong about climate change and wrong about Australia’s contribution to carbon dioxide levels.”

Well she certainly needs to get her facts straight before mouthing off. Her 15 minutes of fame went to her head.

The whole climate change movement is a joke, especially the Paris accord. That's why Trump was smart to cut the United States loose and tell the signees they could use their useless virtual-signaling document for toilet paper.

How exactly do you claim to be worried about global warming while giving China a 15-year pass on carbon emissions? And guess what the Chinese are doing with their free pass?
https://unearthed.greenpeace.org/2019/0 ... 0-climate/

"The largest power producers in China have asked the government to allow for the development of between 300 and 500 new coal power plants by 2030 in a move that could single-handedly jeopardise global climate change targets."

Gee, ya think?

That's why I scoff at anybody getting worked up over how much CO2 Australia or even the U.S. puts out. (Incidentally, for anyone who thinks the U.S. isn't doing enough, Forbes notes the following: "Between 2005 and 2017, U.S. carbon dioxide emissions fell by 12.4% on an absolute basis and by 19.9% on a per capita basis.")

Personally, I think climate change hysteria is more about extorting billions of dollars from economically successful Western nations than solving any environmental problem. The same politicians who preach against the use of fossil fuels had no qualms about flying themselves and their staffers in private jets to the Paris conference.

Somebody obviously doesn't understand the expression "Put a sock in it," which in the United States simply means "be quiet" or "shut up."

It has nothing to do with shoving a sock down anybody's throat.

Nor is it in any way misogynistic, if that's what Turnbull was referring to.

The expression is at least a century old, and apparently it didn't originate in the United States:

Then I guess somebody doesn't really understand the expression. Nobody's shoving a sock down anybody's throat, for crying out loud!
