One thing I thought of but did not implement in George Town was a productive hedgerow.

Raspberries
Blueberries
Red, white and black currants
Tasmanian native berries etc.

Mingle that with
Bay trees—plant in a container, 20L bucket say, to stop it becoming a HUGE tree. A bay tree is a wonderful thing to have in your garden. Look after it closely for a couple years, spend the rest of your life keeping it to manageable size—and enjoying fresh bay leaves in your cooking. Bay wood goes great in the hot smoker.

Woody herbs, sage, oregano.

Black thorn—harvest the sloes, make sloe gin.

In the colder parts of Tasmania a walled garden would be good but $$$. An unheated greenhouse will extend the growing season by one month at each end of the season.
