Toyota Coasters for our Grey Nomad thingie

.............. The older Coasters with the 3.5 and 3.9 long stroke engines were capable of up to 400000kms on the motor but I have never seen a 1HZ do much better than 250000kms and as I said earlier very expensive to recondition. Last 1HZ that we reco'd including injector pump, pistons and bearings and cyl head $15000 approx. Most Coasters started their lives as school or club busses with stop start operation and lots of gearbox use.

If you are going to buy a high km Coaster the 3B or 2H motors are a better bet with high kms. The 3B (3.5l) was in the SWB and the 2H in the LWB. Prices for used Coaster campers have come back in recent times and you can now buy a good modern fitout on a late model bus for around 50k but 30k now gets you a fairly good unit.

Another option is to buy a late model bus and either fit it out yourself or have it done. We recently sold a late model turbo Coaster with under 100,000 kms for 28k. ....................
