Shingles
My youngest cracked his neck last week and then got a terrible pain in his neck. Neck pain and a very bad headache for days followed. All sorts of tests ensued then a couple of days ago he came out in a rash on his neck, behind his ear and in his hair.
Turns out he has shingles. The nerve pain is apparently very severe and he can't move his neck at all.
I thought old people got shingles. I also didn't think it was contagious. You can't pass shingles to shingles but if you have shingles you can pass on chicken pox to people who have never had it. I never knew that before but now I know lol.
I feel so sorry for him, the severe nerve pain is debilitating.

I broke out in a shingles rash on my back when I was about 17. It was not at all painful and went away after a week.

His is really painful. It's nerve pain. I feel really sorry for him as nothing he has been given seems to ease it at all which means he can't sleep.

He needs narcotic analgesia and something to help him sleep.
Very painful.
Hopefully he's feeling better soon.

Yea shingles is somehow connected to chicken pox but you don’t have to be old to get them. My sister had them when she was in her twenties.
I know my father in law had shingles a couple years ago and said it was the worst pain he’d ever had.
It must effect everybody differently.

I was speaking to someone about it today and she said her sister got a really bad case of shingles and then she came down with chicken pox as she hadn't had them as a child. Poor thing. Best to get it over with though.skippy wrote:Yea shingles is somehow connected to chicken pox but you don’t have to be old to get them. My sister had them when she was in her twenties.

Hopefully if you get shingles once it doesn't keep recurring. I have read that it can come back a second time but very rarely a third time.

Re: Shingles
Gp should have given him a script.
Outrageous that he should have to ask.
Call Dr on call to house. Then find 24 hour, chemist.
It's going to get worse before it gets better, so be armed with scripts and exaggerate pain, because in a day or two..... he'll be needing relief.
Best luck.

He has a script. He has something to stop the virus from replicating, something for the nerve pain and some cream he got today.
He was given Lyrica for the nerve pain which I am not keen on but hopefully he won't be taking it for long.

Re: Shingles
Lyrica is great for neuropathic pain, but he may require something stronger, depending if antivirals caught it in time.
At least he has mum keeping an eye on him.
Awful when elderly who live alone get it.
I have heard of case's whereby the pain can be so severe, patients, particularly the elderly can endure other systemic problems, high bp, tachycardia, shock.
Serious case's aren't anything to sneeze at, much worse than it's harmless parent chickenpox.
