The temperature outside Port Augusta was taken "in the sun" which is where we were. Run along dear, 40 degrees is warm. Get used to it - it is what the future holds for us because of Climate Change. Not even touching your comment that 40C is not hot and that it is only mildly warm.Daily temperatures in parts of the state in January and February can be up to 48 °C (118 °F). The highest maximum temperature was recorded as 50.7 °C (123.3 °F) at Oodnadatta on 2 January 1960, which is the highest official temperature recorded in Australia.

Getting back to the thread's TITLE .... "Damned heatwave" ....
I must say that it has cooled down, considerably, here in Canberra. It even got down to about 15C overnight, so one could sleep without tossing and turning.
I haven't needed to turn the aircon on today, currently 25C but it looks like we night get another "brief storm" ... a bit of lightning, thunder and enough rain to water the driveway!
Life is GOOD!

We stayed in Canberra for a couple of nights.
We had camped in Wagga Wagga and were comfortable with just a single blanket
We stayed at Boort and slept comfortable with just a single blanket.
We stayed at Barham on the Murray river, again with a single blanket.
But in Canberra, it hit minus 20000 deg c, we froze.
I gave in and we stayed in a motel for the last two nights.
This was in May.
Bloody cold hole.

I hated Sydney's HUMIDITY ... I don't mind the cold Winters, at least we don't get snowed in here.

When I got married, it was to a country girl.
She had issues with Sydney, said she felt cramped and boxed in.
We moved to the central coast 30 years ago
Back then it was a sleepy retirement place, she loved it and still does.
To me, I see Sydney creeping in, too many people, but she loves her home, so I guess we are stuck.
Humidity is a problem here, we live a few hundred metres from the lake and a couple of k from beautiful soldiers beach.
We used to head for the beach on hot nights to cool off and come home when it got too dark.
The kids loved it.
Now we have full air conditioning throughout, and use it far too much in my mind.
We still go to the beach some nights
Just to walk hand in hand and reminisce
We are still on our honeymoon, it's only been 40 years.

I WOULD be sending the unemployed, starting with the long term unemployed, a letter that they had a job for the picking seasons in different areas - then get a bus and drive them there - a lot of the farmers had bungalo’s when we did it back then although we stayed in caravan parks - or just give them a tent...
Anyways.. if they don’t get on the bus they lose welfare for 6 months
