Public/private... only mediocre kids stand to gain more from a private education. But not much more.

Disagree. My daughter is an advanced learner and her primary school has never given her extra work or challenged her.

You also can't proclaim a blanket statement that tutoring doesn't work. Some kids get a small bump while others totally switch on and learn to love studying

Many children do perfectly well at public schools. My daughter is a self starter and high achiever so I have no doubt shell do well at either. It will be sad for her to not go to school with all of her friends as many are going to the local high school.
They usually, if not always, make new friends in high school. They turn into different people with different interests and if her friends still live in the neighbourhood she will still see them until they walk their different paths.

Absolutely do not agree. Brilliant kids slip through the cracks in the public system annually. A lot depends on the parents though. They don't necessarily need tutoring if they have a good home base and parents who know what to look out for. Many children do not have that and that doesn't mean that they are mediocre and/or not up to par.

We have our girl 6 months of tutoring for all the selective / scholarship practice and she loved it.

It wasn't just rote learning but better methods and more advanced classes. After class she'd blab for am hour about all the cool stuff she learned.

Her primary school only helped the slow kids and everything else was catering for the average.

Hey, don't take my word for it.

Proof is in the pudding after all.

The entire human race wasn't designed to be brilliant.

Regardless of tutoring.

Have u ever wondered how or why Indian and Asian kids get into the OC classes and selective schools like James Ruse or Baulkhamhills or Sydney girls high?

Let's get real.

Either it comes naturally, or your parents work their guts out for it.

I think it best it comes naturally myself.
Who would you rather operating on your aortic aneurysm..... a naturally gifted individual, or a Kip McGrath graduate?

That's the problem now. The public system only caters for average. Which is fine if you are happy with that and/or your kid is average. Bright kids do not get extended and because they are bright they are left to their own devices which is not good imo and is where the boys get lost.

It is all dependent on how bright your kid is by the end of primary school and how much they want to achieve at that point.

Coaching is also an arms race of sorts.

You may have a bright child but without coaching they'll miss a selective place to a similar child who's had exam practice.
