They need to rally the government to get public schools back to the basics in education and make them stop this airy fairy "everyone is average and gets a prize" crap which does not encourage students to push/extend themselves.

They need to rally the government to stop the Safe Schools rubbish and to place more importance on a good education rather than this "it's ok to wear a dress to school if you are a boy" nonsense.

It's up to the parents to enforce change and take the system back to where it should be.

@ Orchid
We have a generation of kids who cannot spell and who can only type in 'text speak' abbreviations. Many cannot even read and they are falling through the government cracks constantly. This would not happen in the private system.
Correct. Not sure what's going on in other States but in SA kids are no longer held back. Reason's range from not damaging their self-esteem to keeping them with their peers. So you get straight D's but get promoted to Year 10 even though you can't do year 9 work. What happens? The kid can't understand a thing they're being taught and act up, disrupting the classroom even further.

This does not happen in the private system as you say.

It aint private if its funded by the public.
Why? Peoole who send their children to private schools are high tax paying individuals. The amount the school gets should be means tested but it shouldn't be zero.
I think I've explained my reasons very clearly Gordon.
Well I disagree.
Oh dear...

Not all private schools are dripping with money and some are just financially viable. Well i never said they were, but you do understand the difference between PRIVATE and PUBLIC don't you? Even if these schools are receiving on a per student basis the exact same as a public school, the Govt is still saving a ton of money. You will note I suggested a per student allowance. Imagine if a very modest private school with an enrollment of 1000 students closed. The infrastructure spend required by the Govt to facilitate these extra students in the public system would be huge and dwarf the per student contribution. No it wouldn't.

I'd adopt the following model for private school funding. There would be two components. A tuition component and an infrastructure component.
My deal is NO PRIVATE SCHOOL FUNDING FROM THE PUBLIC PURSE... Only a student allowance. No federal intervention in state government responsibilities.

Every private school would receive per student the tuition component to the same level of what it costs for a student in a neighboring public school.

The infrastructure component would be assessed on a school by school basis. If the school has what is considered to be the lower than the minimum level of infrastructure of a public school in the same area, it would be funded.
Public school funding for public schools only....

If the school exceeds that level, it gets nothing.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Under my funding model the tax burden per private student would be less than if they were going to a public school. That's a good thing.

But you left out my other points. e.g.
Kids are taking illicit drugs in public schools.

If kids are going to take illicit drugs it doesn't matter which school they go to. They either will or they won't.

Drugs are probably more prevalent in the public schools and I don't have a solution to that other than teachers need to be more diligent and actually care. In some public schools in Sydney the teachers are terrified of the students.

They sent me home with a pack but once I got out of the hospital I felt fine and didn't need any.

One thing worries me about public school is the student to teach ratio.

The local high school has 18 to 1. The school where 1stborn is going had 7 to
