So what do you think?
Ok for little Miss M?
Small, shouldn't mean getting kiddy costumes and kiddy dances.

Re: Too young?
She's mentally and emotionally mature, and gets the themes shes wanting to portray TLd.
She's no dummy ,and she really wants this, she's been asking for something "dark" for a year or so now, is starting to want big girl dances and she's more than capable.

Re: Too young?
Where it said parent interview recommended, I freaked.
It was at this interview they advised that she would be placed into both maths and English extension classes. So phew
She's at a new school now, and at her old public school, interview requests were usually reserved for the naughty kids, so understandably I was a bit concerned, not that she's ever naughty, not at school anyway
.... but I thought that because she'd been in the public sector, they might have had concerns about gaps in her prior- learning knowledge, and may have wanted her to do some remedial homework or something.
But fortunately it was great news.
For the last term she's been on " probation " as is policy at this strict new school, and fortunately, she's passed this term with flying colours and is no longer on probation and is now officially a student who is welcome to remain at BCC.
A boy who would have been in her grade this year dropped the f-bomb at orientation day , so needless to say , regardless of the security bond his parents paid to secure his spot ( covers administration of his application) he wasn't welcome to return and study at BCC this year.
Was never seen again lol.
This is exactly what I wanted, and I am happy with the discipline code at this school.
Orientation day was an entire school day last year in December whereby prospective students spent an entire day with multiple teachers at BCC being assessed and observed in the classroom environment.
It was a day used by the school to determine if they were eligible for proceeding to term 1, 2025 probation trial.
So it's pretty full on, and it's only in the last week that since getting her term 1 progress report and letter of having passed her probation period do I feel brave enough fleshing-out another $1000 for her winter uniforms for next term.
My mum said never a doubt, and I know that I shouldn't get anxious about it because she's a great kid, but I think every parent gets anxious about this stuff, the same way I sit tense in the audience and hold my breath when she's on stage performing. Especially when she's doing acro routines and tricks, airials, back flips, death drops etc
I'm a shocker, need some bloody vallium or something lol
For school exams and dance exams and eisteddfods lol

Re: Too young?
So Tld, do you think this is ok for a theatrical lyrical 14s and under open section?
Would you feel uncomfortable about a kid performing this?
https://youtu.be/KWz7ur-4aLc?si=prhY8rQYSJEjm5vt
I feel it's fine, but I'm a bit biased, biased because obviously I love the music, and think my own child is up to scratch ( which she is) but I don't want a "mums" perspective, I want to know what other parents, the audience and even judges may feel about a kid who looks 9 performing such a mature piece, the themes I mean. They're dark, usually what you would see in the older kids categories. So....
Do you think I should just stop
and let her teacher choose every single piece, I have up until now, never once asked them to consider anything I have considered, just I thought that it can't hurt to ask. She can only say no, and if so, then that's fine.

Re: Too young?
Where's BO when I need her.
My mum thinks M is capable of doing anything, like me, she's biased, but there's a difference between "can do" and " should/shouldn't do".... I guess the only solution is to be brave and ask her dance schools principal.
Cringe.....
I normally don't ask for anything, when I hand my child over to her, she's boss, decides everything, right down to make-up and accessories + costumes.
I do her make-up, but it's exactly what the teachers have requested
No questions asked.
If I'm to ask, it needs to be done before they return to the studio for term 2, or else a private lessons wasted.

I think it is ok and let her to do her own interpretation under your observation, in a way it is her rites of passage because at that age a significant transition from one stage of life to another started to happen.mellie wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 1:22 pmSo Tld, do you think this is ok for a theatrical lyrical 14s and under open section?

Re: Too young?
So true, it is her little rite of passage, her transformation from being a little kid into a bigger kid who are allowed to choose their solos from 3 choices their teacher gives them. I have sent my question off to the dance teacher, as soon as I find out either way I'll let you know how we got on.
Fingers crossed, she's fed up with little kid dances now.
Her teacher has good taste, everything she's ever chosen for M has always been lovely, hopefully she'll love it and let M have this solo.
If not, then I'll just suck it up, and try again in another couple of years. It's her studios reputation afterall, so, it's only fair that she chooses what pieces of music and routines represent her school.
Appreciate your replies Tld, if I asked my close female friends, they'll just agree with me, not tell me if they really thought it were inappropriate, and there's no way I'd ask other dance mums from the studio, this would start ww3, lol...everyone would be demanding to choose their kids solos so....
Out of respect for her teacher, I wouldn't tell other mums if she says yes that we chose her music. Would just cause trouble.

My daughter’s been watching dance mums, but she doesn't understand that the dance culture isn't the same here in Australia, we are more, prudish, less inclined to allow kids to explore heavier themes.
Next they'll be having trigger warnings
Just in case a dance offends someone. Lol
Never seen a Muslim at a dance eisteddfod. Ever!

We got the song 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Her principal dance teachers words " it's absolutely gorgeous Mel"
Also, Miss M, is literally a Miss M now.
She's now officially a student dance teacher, once a week from 4 to 4.45 with beginners ages 5 to 7 , and she starts when dance goes back after the school holidays.
She will have workshops in Melbourne and online classes to attend also.
I knew about this last week after she submitted her very first ever resume, but didn't want to say until/ if she got it first.
She wrote her resume by herself, it was incredible for a 12 year old.
Super proud mamma.
