It had a new queen that I had grafted a few weeks before
Grafted?

A term used to describe the process of removing a three day old grub from a worker cell and placing it into a plastic queen cup, you then place these into a strong queenless hive and the workers will produce new queens from them
Sounds complicated. So the grafted queen doesn't end up being the boss lady? The workers make more? So who then decides who the real queen will be? The workers? Or do the queens fight for supremacy?

If all the queen cells were left in the queen building hive to hatch, the first one out would kill all the remaining queens
there can only be one Queen in the Hive!!

I just lot a hive a couple of weeks back :(

I'll need to find another swarm now!! and I'll be off again :bgrin

Sometimes a mother and daughter will coexist in a hive, but its not common, What killed your hive Mech, youd be luck to come across a swarm this side of spring,,

I could have picked up one on Sunday but i was out of town :nah

But if I don’t get one .. not to worry i’ll Get one next year..

Not sure why this hive died or up and left - apart from being quiet i noticed no pollen coming in for a couple of weeks... i only check them about once a week at the moment as they are out on my block out of town..

So it was only bees coming and going that were robbing what was left in the hive

My Other two hives are going well but not as good as other years... different weather - gums about to flower over the next month so that may turn the fortunes around :)

How often do you re-queen. or do you just let them take care of themselves ?

I've tried requesting twice but I think they have failed twice..

I usually let them do their own thing...

one of the reasons I haven't requeened more .. is because two years in a row my supplier failed to supply
