A new poll suggests 47 per cent of Australian drinkers - about six million people - drink to get drunk.

A majority of Australians who consume alcohol to get drunk at least twice a week believe they are responsible drinkers, a new survey suggests.

The annual poll, released by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education on Wednesday, found that almost half of Australian drinkers - about six million people - do it with the intention of getting drunk.

Of these, 78 per cent consider themselves a responsible drinker.

About two-thirds of those who drink to get drunk at least twice a week or consume 11 or more standard drinks on a typical occasion also believe they're responsible.

What other reason is there to drink than to be drunk, whatever level of drunk? I may drink 3-4 times per year and always at home. I'm big on personal responsibility and don't want to be a hypocrite.
