About 3 months ago, I actually met one of the guys who used to run the Canberra medieval festival for about 10 years he said. The Blacktown Medieval festival got 10,000 people attending it last year. Sussex Inlet has a Viking festival I think, too.

I always think of the scene from Jim Carey's The Cable Guy
" Come here so I can brain thee!" as he swings his big mace.

Unlike in a real fight they are not allowed to stab, that keeps casualty rate down, only 80 cases in total and none fatal. The worse case was somebody's eye popped out but doctors put it back in.

These are real hand-to-hand fights

as depicted on the Pylos Combat Agate carving sometime 3500-4000 years ago
Pylos Combat Agate, c. 1500 BC.gif

and
a video of hand-to-hand fight between Ukrainian vs Russian filmed on the Ukrainian fighter body camera November last year.

Warning: Very tough footage that should not be watched by the impressionable and the faint of heart.

The dialogue between the two opponents after the deadly fight was over deserves special attention.
Their words show more respect for each other as opponents than the herd of bloodthirsty scum on both sides, calling from the couch to wage war to the last Russian/Ukrainian.
Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!
Note: there are videos without blurring available as well as a video from a drone flying above and interview with the Russian combatant after he was discharged from hospital.

Rare to see hand to hand combat in an age of Projectile warfare.
Seems the more primitive Russian won that one.

What was once a Sword
Is now a Scalpel.

...the projectile weapon is of another.
