Pakistan at Risk

Post by Postul8 » Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:20 pm

I've just watched Four Corners. I have nothing but extraordinary admiration for reports like Matthew Carney. The eventual outcome for Pakistan looks grim, with half of the country under Taliban control, and a Pakistan army unable or unwilling to counter a growing, spreading brand of fundamentalist, anarchic Islam. Meanwhile in Afghanistan, Taliban manage to keep what NATO and allied forces exist there, occupied, virtually fenced in. It seems to me the focus of Taliban fundamentalism is no longer Afghanistan, but a politically bereft Pakistan, and Pakistan has nuclear weapons.

I harbour no fear of Iran obtaining or using nuclear weapons, but who would be brave enough to claim fundamentalist Taliban disciples wouldn't?

apparently the drones aren't as accurate as the military would like everyone to believe. Collateral damage doesn't win hearts & minds, even if those hearts & minds want to be won. It's a worrying issue given Pakistan has a nuclear capability and teeters close to the edge of failed state status.
