JULIA Gillard wants the Coalition to help the government determine the facts behind the deaths of asylum-seekers in the Christmas Island disaster.

The Prime Minister's invitation to the opposition to join a bipartisan group came as authorities continued to search for more victims from the boat which smashed into rocks at Christmas Island yesterday, killing at least 28 men, women and children.
Another EPIC FAIL notch on Labors bedhead

Pamela Curr and her like have encouraged this travesty. Get on the boats, she says. We'll make sure your ok  We'll make sure your story fits the required entry exam  Call me from the boat
Jamal Daoud, spokesman for the Social Justice Network, said two Iraqi detainees on the island's detention centre had families on board the destroyed boat.

He said the Department of Immigration and Citizenship was refusing to tell the detainees whether their relatives were dead or alive.

Last night, a department spokesman said he was not aware of any detainees being related to those on the boat.

Howard changed his policy after 300 asylum seekers drowned. No doubt Gillard will have to do the same. Remember one of the issues that got the Libs voted out was their harsh stance on boat people - re the Pacific Solution.

Gillard changed that and unfortunately under her watch another tragedy has occurred. I think that the UN will apply more pressure on East Timor to accommodate the processing now and hopefully that will become a reality sooner than later.

No government has ever found a solution to the problem of the boat people and regardless of whether you righties believe that Howard did - it has cost us a lot more in the long term with most of those detained in centres for years being granted residency, but losing their ability to function as workers in the process. Our compensation payments today are massive.

Many of the boat people are from war torn Afghanistan and Iraq and it is our obligation as a founding member of the UN to accommodate refugees - especially since our involvement in the war on the ME caused many of them to flee in the first place.

This isn't about Howard or you Howard haters who are unable and unwilling to let go and focus on the current govt. You know if you had to do that you would be forced to face the fact that your sponsorship of the Liebor party and their inept policies and handling means you also have blood on your hands.

You, Mantra are partly responsible for the deaths of those boat people.

You should be ashamed of yourself

If that's the logic you prefer to use - then you are partly responsible for the 353 drownings under Howard's watch. It doesn't matter what government is in power - they can't be held responsible for these tragic deaths. Even when the Coalition introduced the Pacific Solution - you don't know how many boats sunk after that. We only know about this one because there are witnesses.

Abbott's solution is to intercept and send them back or re-introduce the Pacific Solution - yet he refuses to disclose where he intends to send them. This indicates they'll still keep coming. Many of these boats haven't the capacity to return and will sink along the way. Out of sight out of mind isn't a solution.

That you fail to see the difference being that this tradgedy is a direct result of the lefts soft cock approach to the country shoppers doesn't surprise me. The right actively discouraged the people smugglers after a tragic event. The left encouraged the people smugglers to restart their illegal trade and are responsible for the loss of lives.

I'm probably short on the facts, but it looked like the crew aimed the boat at the rocks.

It lost power, didn't it? With the inevitable consequences.

But I guess we'll find out, eventually, after a drawn out enquiry (it took months to get the real picture of the "children overboard" incident).
