THE $16.2 billion schools stimulus scheme is set to become the biggest single waste of money in the nation's history, with about $5bn to be wasted in overcharging, needless bureaucratic costs, pointless over-design of buildings and fee gouging by managing contractors.
The Weekend Australian has found there is a systemic problem with the cost of buildings provided to public schools, with most paying double -- in some cases up to 10 times -- what they should be for buildings. Of the $11.27bn handed to the state governments to deliver schools to public buildings, about $5bn has been wasted, when compared to construction rates achieved by Catholic and private schools and industry benchmarks.
According to NSW Department of Education internal costing benchmarks, the state government expects to pay $4271 per square metre for classrooms and $5400 per square metre for libraries. The Catholic Church has set total maximum building cost benchmarks at $2426 per square metre for classrooms and $2451 per square metre for libraries. These costs are absolute and factor in a 40 per cent margin for all non-construction costs such as fitouts, design, site preparation and water and electricity installations. The modest "cookie cutter" school hall being delivered to hundreds of NSW public schools is costing $5400 per square metre...............

Did you see that town with a large aboriginal and homeless population that got a 650,000 brick dogbox for a school canteen, which they didn't need, instead of something they did?
The fucking thing is strong enough to withstand a tsunami, and would hold only about 15 people, and there are people sleeping on the streets.
Rudd has done what I wanted him to do and got rid of Howard. Now we need a real leader - and it ain't Tony Abbott.

Hopefully not Gillard, her voice and speech mannerisms make my ears bleed.

Yet another example of the Rudd government being way to easy on those corporate rip off merchants. Isn't it obvious to them yet that the business community can't be trusted, and that we need moar bureaucrats to make sure that they actually deliver what is needed, and what they get paid for. Same thing happened with the insulation installers. You can't trust them to do a job properly, you've got to go and look over their shoulders every step of the way

I agree with you Boxy - unfortunately it was ultimately the government's responsibility though. People whinge about the nanny state, but these cowboy installers appeared, were not trained, had no idea about OHS, and the builders must have made a bloody fortune.
And these are probably the people who are now complaining about Labor, who should, after all, have foreseen this, taken notice of Garratt when he first spoke up, and realised that there's a lot of greedy and dishonest bastards out there.

hebe - your avatars great.
if the govt accepts overblown quotes, it's the govts fault.
they have wasted your money.
appointing more unproductive bureaucrats is pointless. they caused the 1st poblem
if the govt sets up a "free insulation" idea that is hopelessly flawed, it is the govts fault.
the system was ceased because it was deeply flawed. it alone has destroyed the insulation s=industry.
IF garrett spoke up some time ago (which was obvious to anyone who has run any business) then rudd was at fault and should be fired.

We heard from Henry that miners suffered big drops in production and sales and sacked 15% of their workforce.
So the BER and the HIP, great programs both, insulation installation is now twice as safe as before with less than a quarter of the risk of roof fires and schools have halls that they can rent out, more classrooms etc, and it was these programs and the two cash splashes that saved Australia from descending into recession and 10% unemployment, at a cost of a small fraction of our GDP in debt.
Both brilliant programs. No one here could see that? How sad. This used to be a place politics and current affairs were debated. Now it is more like the sand pit at a kindergarten.

And ABS figures come out and support the fact that it was not mining that saved us from the GFC but the government stimulus, including the great HIP and BER:
THE mining industry has enjoyed its first quarter of profit growth since the height of the financial crisis, driving a surge in company earnings, as the economic recovery takes hold.
Gross mining profits rose 9.2 per cent in the three months to March to $15 billion, the first quarterly rise since September 2008, as economy-wide profits rose by 3.9 per cent, according to Bureau of Statistics estimates published yesterday.
The figures cast doubt on the mining industry's claims it helped keep Australia out of recession, while also highlighting the patchy nature of the recovery. (my emphasis)
In its attack on the proposed resources super profits tax, the mining industry has argued it played a critical role in supporting growth. But the ABS numbers underline the hit miners took from the slowdown - their quarterly profits remain almost 40 per cent below the pre-crisis peak of $24.4 billion.

The above I just copied from what the chunky monk posted on PA. The facts are in. Of course the vile Libs, including the jerkoff IQ_BLOWS
wanted a big recession. Shame on them.
No one here posted to expose IQ_BLOWS' and Sprinty's lies? What a sad state this board, FD's board as we now must call it, has fallen to.
