Chinese Playing War Games Close to Home

Commercial flights diverted as Chinese warships undertake apparent live-fire drill in sea between Australia and New Zealand.

Chinese warships have undertaken an apparent live-fire drill in the seas between Australia and New Zealand, diverting commercial flights in the skies above.

The Chinese navy notified the Australian defence department shortly before the drill on Friday.

Three People’s Liberation Army-Navy vessels – the Jiangkai-class frigate Hengyang, the Renhai-class cruiser Zunyi and the Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu – are now about 340 nautical miles off Eden, on New South Wales south coast, in international waters. The drill was in accordance with international law.

It is understood at least three commercial flights diverted their course.

NZ-bound flights diverted due to Chinese military drills

February 21, 2025 •06:27pm

A flight from Sydney to Christchurch was warned to avoid airspace between Australia and New Zealand on Friday morning due to the Chinese military conducting live fire exercises.

The Emirates flight was warned directly by air traffic controllers at around 1pm (NZ time), while other airlines have had to divert flights as a result of the drills.

The Chinese military were said to have been conducting their drills 547km south-east of Sydney.

Air New Zealand told RNZ it "has modified flight paths as needed to avoid the area, with no impact on our operations".

Warnings continue to remain in place, with the Australian Defence Force saying the drills have caused significant disruption due to the limited notice period and impact on commercial flights.

Its' not fair -
how would the Chinese like it if we fired missiles in the area of a busy air route
off the coast of China?
