Turnbull says to dump AUKUS subs deal

Post by Bobby » Fri Feb 21, 2025 5:23 am

Malcolm Turnbull was on ABC 24 last night.

He said that in the light of Trump's action in Ukraine we need to
re-evaluate our AUKUS contract for subs as we need to be able to defend ourselves alone
and not rely on the US or the UK.

The video is available now on YouTube.

I hope there is a get out clause?

Have we been ripped off over submarines?
ScoMo signed it but did he know:
Look at the actual cost of the subs that the Yanks pay:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia-class_submarine

Planned cost: about US$1.65 billion each (based on FY95 dollars, 30-boat class and two boat/year build-rate)
Actual cost: US$1.5 billion (in 1994 prices), US$2.6 billion (in 2012 prices)[108][109]
Annual operating cost: $50 million per unit (in 2012 prices)
Let's say that the cost is A$5 billion each.
We're paying $368 billion for 8 subs.
368/8 = $46 billion for each sub, 46b/5b = 9
which is about 9 times the price that we should be paying.

I know – yes -
we will get submarine manufacturing Australian locations in the deal but still -
why should we pay 9 times the price?

It’s an eye watering cost at $46 billion for each sub.

Just as a comparison - the Large Hadron Collider at CERN took 10 years to build and cost US$4.75 billion.

I think it's all too expensive and too hard.
We would be better off putting money towards a long range air force
and guided missiles to take out any invading ships.
That's a lot faster and a lot easier than submarines.

We have also had trouble crewing the subs -
people don't want to live and work in a dangerous metal tube.
It gives me claustrophobia just thinking about it.

The Swedish subs are better than these big clunkers which will be outdated by the time we get them and they're cheaper.
We should be building smaller and more efficient Mini Subs which can also provide a foundation as proto types for anything larger and more expensive.
We have a huge coastline and just 8 big clunkers can't patrol all of it in an immediate action need.
We are basically being ripped off blind to fund the USA and British military war chests.
Hell. Whyalla Steelworks has once again gone to crap.
How on earth are we going to build these here? Let alone maintain them.
Things happen in 3's.
First, the French fiasco. Now the US/British rip off.
Maybe 3rd time lucky having Germany & Japan making them for us. Ironic considering they were the enemy not so long ago.
But hey, that's how things work sometimes.

There would be (sea/air) blockade well before any invasion and the best mitigation of that is to make Australia self sufficient.
Also it seems that new paradigm of war is autonomous (pilot-less) machines in air, on ground, on and under sea surface that are cheap enough to build in big numbers and operators are easier and quicker to train.
Ah yes, smart diplomacy is absolutely essential.

I wouldn't trust Turncoat Turnbull as far as I could spit.

Last person I'd be taking military advice from with his track record.

Lol.... Turnbull has so much to say doesn't he. The man lacks etiquette and has no shame.
The best PM'S we've ever had have always kept out of politics and not had opinions either way once leaving politics. See, both Keating and Turnbull were both party traitors, and what they really wanted to be were President's.

Looky here at Turnbull making excuses for Albos botched attempt to secure tariff exemptions.

"Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has clashed with an ABC presenter while arguing Australia must not self-censor to appease Donald Trump."

Since when does the ',Woke' ABC clash with 'woke'?
That's bullshit to begin with, do they honestly think we're idiots?

"Mr Turnbull suggested the Albanese government would not be to blame if it failed to secure tariff exemptions."

Of course not, Turnbull is a traitor and still has ambitions for becoming Australia's first President.

Fact is, Trump knows where our current governments loyalties lie so isn't likely to make their term in office anymore fruitful if he can help it.

Furthermore, why should the US grant us tariff exemptions on an industry which is in competition with our own?

Trump has a duty to do what's best for Americans, not us.

Nothing beats a little healthy competition, why get down on an old friend, key- allie because they want to do what's right by their own aluminium manufacturing industry?

Our current government isn't capable of working within an AUKUS framework and are doing their best to wreck it because China wants it this way.

Wake up people, before it's too late.

Note to Turnbull, Australian voters, and both Labors and Liberals ranks can't stand you, you are a painfully conceited arrogant tretcherous self interested prick and have absolutely none of the qualities that any Australians would want to see in their first President.

I reckon you'd have difficulty getting your own dog to allow you to take him for a walk. He wouldn't want to be seen with you either. The piedpiper of of Point Piper. You just aren't relatable, likable or even enviable. Sorry! Successful in business perhaps, just not likely to appeal to anyone apart from your buddies down at the golf course and perhaps your grand kids.

So move on and stop trying to weevil yourself back into news, being relevant, ...because despotism is never a good look Malcolm, not even for you.

Convince me of otherwise!

Exactly. If we are self sufficient, we'll be secure and well placed to deal with a global trade war.

We need to focus on transitioning to nuclear power, and both parties need to be on board and stop dragging the chain.

Should already have been done by now.
