Dutton's nuclear power station idea?

Post by Bobby » Thu Jun 20, 2024 11:13 am

My opinion:

We have plenty of gas that we give away to other countries and
we have top quality anthracite coal in the Bowen basin in QLD.
Both have low emissions and we're happy to sell them to other countries
to burn as much as they want - go figure?

Also - Dutton's nuclear ideas may end after WW3 starting in Europe via Ukraine.
Nuclear power stations become targets and can melt down in any war.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station has already been hit.

I like the prospect of going nuclear.
We need to be more self sufficient and less dependent on China.

I have no problem with us going nuclear. Bills are going up AGAIN because there's no wind for the wind turbines and our power stations have fallen into a total state of neglect. At least they haven't all been razed yet as was' Casanova' Bowen's intent.

Anyone watch that recent Chernobyl doco with all the new unreleased footage?
Horrific stuff. Especially when the Government continually lied to the public and denied the proof of people suffering from the contamination.
Even worse was the poor blokes who had to be sent in like fodder right into the radioactivity above the reactor to shovel stuff that made no difference anyway. This was the reason the USSR fell.
They tried to blame 'human error' - but the design of the USSR reactors were at fault. None of their reactors had been designed to 'contain' all contamination if the reactor melted, imploded, etc. American designs apparently had.

So, as long as the reactors are built and designed with as much contingency, even earthquakes. Then fine.
But its the 'waste' that is the real issue.
Look what happened to the people and the Tasmanian Devils when John Howard the environmentalist terrorist allowed Toxic Drums to be dumped into a high mountain lake. They obviously 'seeped' and into the waterways like creeks and streams running down from it and thus all those Devils and People exposed in those areas developed tumors and cancers.

But can nuclear reactors survive terrorist attacks or attacks during a war?

No. Not much else can either. Lucas Heights in Sydney and Pine Gap are targets. Sydney will experience it's worst housing 'boom' ever.

What about Thorium reactors?
They can't melt down.

There are many severe technical problems:
corrosion of pipes and
the molten salt has to be cleaned out continuously from contaminants that stop the reaction -
but that is what makes it safe - it's walk away safe.

Well the Cold (Default) War of USSR & USA would have been absolutely catastrophic due to the amount of Nukes they had and the less stable reactors they had spotted around the world.
Sure, now - more nations have nukes, but there isn't as many as the Cold War.
So I guess we know the dark side of 'nuclear power', but there could also be a 'positive' side to it as well. For general 'power' use overall.
Well, let's hope anyway.

Asimov wrote that we would be using 'atomic' power from wristwatches, vehicles and nearly everything.
Of course, there is the 'waste' side-effect.
Reckon we put it on the moon and heat the bloody thing up for some nice tropical weather. :P
