Voter satisfaction with Coalition and Labor drops: Newspoll
Australians are fed up with both Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese, according to a new poll, with support rising for minor parties.
Australians are fed up with both sides of politics, showing little faith in either the Coalition or the Labor Party, the latest Newspoll has revealed.
Amid ongoing Covid-19 lockdowns in Australia's most popular states – NSW and Victoria – Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest level since the 2019-20 bushfire crisis.
But Australians aren’t impressed with the alternative either, with Labor leader Anthony Albanese’s approval rating dropping to an all-time low.
Mr Albanese received a negative score approval rating of -11, which is his worst score since becoming opposition leader in 2019.
Thirty seven per cent of voters say they would vote for the Coalition if an election was held today, while 38 per cent say they would support Labor.
Neither party would be able to secure a win at an election with votes that low.
As Aussies turn away from both major parties, support for independents and minor parties is on the rise.
While the Greens and One Nation have seen no improvement in their primary vote scores, smaller parties which fit into the ‘other’ category have seen their support from voters surge.
Twelve per cent of voters now say they would vote for an independent or smaller party if an election was held today – the highest score ever achieved by this group since the Newspoll survey began in 2018.
Mr Morrison’s government would experience a significant loss if voters could not vote for smaller parties and were forced to choose between the Coalition and Labor.
In a two-party preferred vote, 53 per cent of Australians would vote for Labor while only 47 per cent would back the Coalition.
While this represents a marginal improvement for the Coalition on the previous Newspoll, Labor still maintains its strongest lead on the current government since 2019.
The Australian’s Newspoll was conducted from September 15 to 18 and polled voters across metropolitan and regional areas.
