My father (and grandfather) had a rifle and a shotgun. Dad kept his guns in the "broom cupboard" and the ammunition elsewhere. As children we (my sisters and I) knew that they were off limits. My Grandfather gave my Mother a 410 shotgun when she was 12 and they used to go "rabbit hunting" together, apparently. I could never, ever kill anything (except a spider). They were country folk and we were sent off to Boarding School in Melbourne, as was the trend back then. My sisters still live in Melbourne.

In reality, criminals have few guns and use them more rarely than people appear to believe.

The post-Port Arthur Firearms Regulations were intended to act as a "circuit breaker" - they were intended to get out of general circulation the sorts of firearms which were used most often in "massacre" type situations - semi-automatic long arms and pump action shotguns. They achieved that. They were not intended to disarm the Australian population. Today, there are more privately owned firearms than before Port Arthur. They are however just the types considered acceptable by the authorities - bolt or lever action longarms, double or single barreled shotguns.

Australians have indicated their approval of the present firearms regime Downunder numerous times since their introduction. The Firearms Parties have failed dismally to change the regulations. I think its time they realised they wasting theirs and our time.
