The socialist movement has been responsible for the murder, imprisonment, and torture of many millions, and perhaps hundreds of millions, of innocent people during its heyday in the twentieth century. That history of murder and tyranny continues on a smaller scale today in the handful of countries living under the misfortune of socialism—for example, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, and (more recently) Venezuela.

How do socialists escape the indictment that, in view of the historical record, they are purveyors of tyranny and mass murder? Many deny that Stalin, Mao, and the others were true socialists and, indeed, that socialism has never really been tried—a manifest absurdity. Senator Sanders and others claim that they are for something called “democratic socialism,” a popular and peaceful version of the doctrine, but that’s what Lenin, Mao, and Castro said until they seized power and immediately began to sing a different tune. Democracy and diversity are what they say when out of power; tyranny and authoritarianism are what they practice once in power. That is the tried-and-true technique of all socialist movements.

Socialism, proper socialism, not Communism is how most of the Western World functions. It is mixed with Capitalism to produce a system which ameliorates both and produces a system which benefits the majority. Unfortunately we are moving closer to the USA than to Israel in this field. Israel was once consider the most Socialist country in the world. Australia was about number three. However, that was in the 1970s. Today, we have "economic rationalism", "User pays" and the massive sell off of State owned and controlled enterprises. Just how well has that done Australian society? It has failed in South Australia - where the electrical generation and supply systems failed dismally. They now only generate electricity through renewables and their distribution system caused the failure of power in the State not so long ago. In NSW, they are suffering from transportation bottlenecks and of course, other infrastructure failures. Same for Victoria and Tasmania and Queensland. WA is lagging behind a little but we have a sensible Labor Government in power at the moment and that process has halted thankfully.

The difference between communism and socialism is like the difference between an orange and a mandarin.

Remember USSR/CCCP ? ... Russia and its colonies were communist, but they called themselves "socialist".

Call it what you like and paint it any colour you prefer, but it's still Marxist collectivism.
And the reason Marxist regimes can't tolerate scrutiny or criticism is for the same reason monarchies couldn't tolerate scrutiny or criticism,
because they're both elitist totalitarianism.

At least in a plutocracy the bottom dwellers have a chance to succeed without criminality ... a slim one, but a chance all the same.
