A CONTROVERSIAL Australian-Chinese businessman allegedly named in a secret intelligence brief over links to the Chinese Communist Party gave senior Labor figure Tony Burke a $30,000 donation before the last federal election, new disclosures show.
Billionaire Chau Chak Wing’s Hong Kong Kingson Investment firm gave the donation to Labor’s Watson federal campaign account on May 17 last year.
Labor figure Tony Burke was given a $30,000 donation from Chinese-Australian businessman Chau Chak Wing.
Labor received almost $71 million in donations in the 12 months to June 30 last year, while the Liberal Party received $95 million – including $1.75 million from Malcolm Turnbull.
The Coalition received $107 million in total during that period.
That made the Prime Minister the country’s largest political donor, followed by Roslyn Packer, the widow of the late media mogul Kerry Packer, who donated $500,000.
The donation to Mr Burke was given less than a month before Labor leader Bill Shorten said his party would no longer accept money from two high-profile Chinese-Australian businessmen – Dr Chau and property developer Huang Xiangmo – following allegations ASIO had warned there was a potential they were conduits for the Chinese government.
“I am sufficiently concerned that I don’t believe my political party should be taking money from these two people or their associates,” Mr Shorten said in June, just three weeks after Mr Chau’s company donated the funds.
The Daily Telegraph reported in December that decision led to a blazing row between Mr Shorten and Mr Burke.
Dr Chau has described claims he had ties to the Communist Party or that he was a conduit for the Chinese government as irrational.
ASIO has warned Labor and Liberal officials as early as 2015 about taking donations from foreign Chinese groups or companies which allegedly have links to the Communist Party.
Dr Chau has previously donated more than $800,000 to the Liberal Party and $200,000 to Labor, with the most recent donation revealed in disclosures made public today.

Isn't he the same guy who pulled Dastyari's traitorous strings alongside Huang Xiangmo?
