Looks like Fiji are keen to be even further isolated, all because we wouldn't let in a few of their tame judges.
Good luck with that...

Fiji - flying the coup
"But you will run your fluffy bunny mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."
Re: Fiji - flying the coup
Hi all ... forgot password to my original character and my puppet didn't work but that's OK 'coz I prefer this ratbag alter ego anyway.
Been to Fiji a fair bit ... luv the place ... even my 1st girlfriend was half Indian half Fijian.
Fiji (way back) had been offered membership in the Commonwealth but knocked it back, and only joined later for protection ... they were about to be invaded by Tonga ... Fijians and Tongans still hate one another to this day.
Once the Britz took over they imported a heap of Indians to work on the sugar plantations which the Fijians resented and still do.
The Fijian population is 51% Indian, 1% Chinese, 1% white/caucasian, and the rest Fijian. The Fijians aren't too happy about being out numbered in their own country, so over time installed a few "Fijian only" privileges ... although the law preventing foreigners buying/owning land seems to have been relaxed/repealed ... have seen adds for Fijian properties for sale in OZ.
Anyway the shops are generally Indian owned and the Police and army are generally Fijian staffed.
Whenever they have an election the Indians out vote the Fijians so every once in a while the Fijians say "stuff yer democracy, it's our country, so we're taking control"
So most Fijians don't really care about being kicked out of the Commonwealth or foreign pollie condemnation and threats of isolation, because they know foreigners are still going to patron their resorts.
As far as I've heard, this latest spat is because Frank Bainimarama intended to appoint Sri Lankan judges to the judiciary (as opposed to Fijian Indian lawyers) on the grounds they'd be more impartial than Indians.

Well, interesting stuff. However, no matter how hard the original Fijians spin it, fact is the Indians have also been there for many generations. They breed like rabbits, them Indians.
Fiji can't win this, unless the originals are willing to overcome an Indian revolt, and then reduce their economy to subsistence.

If the fat diabetic original inhabitants of the isle were not so racist rather than trying to turn the place into a relic of Polynesia past they would try to cooperate with the Indian population and make greater economic ties with an economically emerging India.
