Two recent deaths at one of Adelaide's most popular beaches should spur authorities to do more to fund swimming and beach safety education for migrants and tourists, surf lifesavers have said.
A 15-year-old boy of African heritage yesterday became the latest drowning victim — and the second in eight days — after getting into trouble near the Glenelg jetty.
Lifeguards were among those who rushed to the aid of the teenager after his body was found by two other boys at about 4:30pm.
Paramedics gave him CPR but were unable to revive him, and it has since emerged the boy may have been jetty jumping before he died.

This is a very sad thing to happen but before we go offering free swimming lessons, selectively just to migrants, perhaps it would be better to ensure that they learn, speak and read English?
Recently a camera team went to Vietnamatta to see how many people could speak English specifically relevant to driving cars and reading road signs. 95% of them had no clue. How the hell can they be allowed to drive on our roads if they can't even read the road signs? Consequently they are a hazard!!

Aren't migrants offered free English lessons? If they can't read DANGER signs, they shouldn't go anywhere dangerous ... or drive a car on our roads! How can they even get a Driving Licence if they can't read/speak English?

I think it is up to them whether or not they choose to take the free English classes or not. It should be a mandatory obligation before they are allowed to settle.

just about every sign is in other languages....and I agree at beaches yet it should be...we have a lot of tourists we cant expect them to b experts in our language..
BUT having said that...they should be expected to have English if and when they apply for a drivers licence..or forklift licence...anywhere where English is involved......its absurd .. the way others are allowed to speak for them or fill in the forms...
this sadly was a young boy....and young boys do dangerous things no matter what anyone says..or how many rules we make.

I agree so why not fund swimming and beach safety education for ALL Aussies rather than just migrants and tourists?

OMG!
It was free AND mandatory back in the Dark Ages ie the early 1960's when both my parents migrated to Australia from Europe.

I think the word "tourist" was just tossed in as an appeasement.
I think most tourists would understand the meaning of the word
DANGER coupled with a big
RED circle around a swimmer/diver and a big
RED cross through it.
Just saying

Father drowns in bid to rescue sons at Victorian beach
Police are investigating after a father drowned while trying to rescue his two children at a surf beach on Victoria's south-west coast.
Emergency services were called to Skenes Creek on the Great Ocean Road after the 41-year-old Sydenham man got into trouble in the water about 1:20pm.
Police said another family member tried to help the man but he could not be revived.
An eight-year-old boy and 12-year-old boy were rescued.
Ambulance Victoria said the two children were taken to hospital in Geelong in a stable condition with no obvious injuries.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
