The Dunning-Kruger effect

Post by Idjit in Atl Too Lazee to Login » Thu Oct 09, 2008 4:22 am

Something I came across and has been on my mind ...

The Dunning-Kruger effect: the more ignorant and "incompetent" a person is in completing logical tasks, the more he will overestimate his own level of skill. He will also usually think he is smarter than other people, even when confronted with facts to the contrary.

Likewise, more informed "competent" people tend to assume just the opposite – that they know less than they do. They also assume that other people are more informed and skilled than they actually are.

Not only does the Dunning-Kruger effect explain the Bush presidency, Palin's "intuition" and McCain's reversals but also Frogen's behaviour on PA.

With the public happily ignorant and incompetent its no surprise lying works better than the truth.

No, Frogen's behaviour is best explained by the Freddy - Kruger Effect.

Freddy Kruger's mother was accidentally trapped inside a ward of a psychiatric hospital that was used to house the very worst of the criminally insane. She was raped and tortured by the 100 patients confined there. You're not saying that Frogen is .... ?

*Frogen checks his nails for rust.*

To the original post, the sentiment was very Swami-like in style, but more importantly often shared by many on the Left.

The belief that if some one disagrees they are stupid, if most of the public disagrees, then they too are stupid. (Hilariously considered a symptom of the very condition the poster was accusing Bush, McCain and others on the Right.)

And so Bush (who is inarticulate), a man who has defeated his supposedly more intelligent opponents in every election he has fought, defeated them on the vast majority of political battles he has had with them, (passing almost his entire legislative agenda in the first term with a hostile Dem Congress having barely won the election, most of his legislation his second term and even defying Congress on Iraq and getting his spending through despite his low poll numbers) is stupid.

Which makes his opponents who keep loosing to him what?

Don't answer, I am sure you are too smart to get it.

Not mine, spermy.

I don't start threads as a muppet.

Although the muppet's point is valid. See Dolly Downer.

I like you so I choose to believe you.

Even if I do not rationally believe you.

And so the thread goes.................

The Republican candidates understand this effect -- both Palin and McCain have been exposed as liars yet continue to repeat the same lies... but couldn't you say that Obama is on the other end of this effect by overestimating voters?

The Man from Boys Town has a point ... and you too: Bush defeated his more intelligent opponents by understanding the DK effect - the more he lies to the Ignorant Who Know the more his support grows.
