AN Australian-backed aid facility has been destroyed by Russian and Syrian-regime fighters in the embattled city of Aleppo, Syria as the UN condemned the civilian blood-soaked street as beyond the rules of war.

Aid agency Oxfam has reported one of its sanitation blocks - including water and toilet stations - was destroyed in a recent run of bombings which yesterday included helicopter-dropped barrels bombs.

A Melbourne-based spokesman for Oxfam said the sanitation facilities block was built in May and they didn’t know of the state of all their aid, made from Aussie public donations till now.

The loss was adding to the humanitarian crisis as a source of freshwater was lost.

He said the aid group’s operations in northern Iraq about Mosul were under strain from the war with fleeing ISIS militants setting fire to oil wells.

He said the acrid smoke billowing now for days is causing serious health issues particularly for children but also adults in the area including his staff.

One Adelaide worker, Amy Christian, has been hospitalised with breathing difficulties because of the fires.

A spokesman said Ms Christian, who still has family in South Australia but was originally from the UK before moving to Adelaide, spoke about the area around Mosul as a “smoke-filled hell”.
