‘Homophobes already have a voice’

Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm, who has previously introduced his own bill to legalise gay marriage and will support the government’s plebiscite, said those who thought they could force the Coalition to change its position against a parliamentary vote were “dreaming”.

He also had a message for LGBTI advocates who oppose the plebiscite because it gives a voice to homophobes: “Harden up”.

“You may not want to accept it, but homophobes already have a voice, and guess what, they’ll continue to have a voice for the rest of time. It’s called a free society,” he says.

“Your suggestion that an acrimonious debate will prompt suicides and other mental health issues in the LGBTI community is obnoxious. These are normal people, not mentally fragile little daffodils affronted by name calling.”

The thought of blocking a peoples' choice Plebiscite on the notion that a minority of a minority may commit suicide because they cannot handle the discussion leading up to it is exactly why we should have a Plebiscite in the first place.
