Eric Abetz says Gillian Triggs should decline invite to Truth Telling conference after Senate Estimates error

Tasmanian Liberal powerbroker Eric Abetz has launched a scathing attack on Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs, arguing she is in no position to give a lecture on telling the truth at a conference next month.

Professor Triggs is due to give a speech at the ACOSS national conference called Truth Telling — Speaking with Conviction, Living with the Consequences.

She has been under fire from many members of the Coalition, after she conceded she told a journalist some politicians were uneducated and ill-informed, despite initially denying the comments in a Senate Estimates committee hearing.

It prompted government frontbencher Christopher Pyne to call for Professor Triggs to "stay out of politics".

Senator Abetz said the incident was another example of why Professor Triggs should cancel her speech at the conference.

"I would've thought given the serious difficulties in which she has placed herself in not being robust with the evidence in front of the Senate committee, it would be wise for her to decline that invitation," he said.
Triggs' evidence found wanting on 'too many occasions'

Senator Abetz has been a staunch critic of Professor Triggs for some time, and questioned her integrity.

    "Her evidence has now been found wanting on too many occasions to really clothe her with any credibility," he said.

"Professor Triggs has got herself into public controversy in circumstances that raises questions about the robustness of her evidence.

"In those circumstances, holding herself out as an expert on truth-telling is not necessarily the wisest option for her."

Professor Triggs has declined the ABC's request for comment.

The latest attack on the Human Rights Commission president comes as the Government faces questions over its relationships with public servants.

Solicitor-General Justin Gleeson stood down after a bitter public brawl with Attorney-General George Brandis earlier this week, and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce denied the former head of the Agriculture Department had been sacked.

more often than not it is Labor that behaves in that way and when leaving they always make sure there are booby traps for incoming governments.
