Canberra’s median house price has hit another record high as heated competition for limited stock shows no signs of cooling off.

The national capital’s median house price climbed to $661,912 over the September quarter, according to latest Domain House Price Report released on Thursday.

Apartments prices have also bounced back over the same period, rising 1.3 per cent to a median of $403,775.

Those who live in Sydney or Melbourne might snigger but remember that Canberra's population is still UNDER 400,000 and not everyone is a Public Servant earning $100,000 plus a year.

A friend asked me to look for a place for them in Sydney, wanting to spend around $1,250,000.

I looked around my area and found nothing except for 2 bedroom units and townhouses. What an absolute disgrace that is. It's shameful.

I know. When I left Sydney in December, 1980 ... houses in St Ives were selling for $60,000.

When I arrived in Canberra in January 1981 (and decided to stay here) a friend bought a house in Weetangera for $60,000.

Sydney house prices have increase a LOT more. At one stage I thought about moving back to Melbourne (about 1998) and I could have sold my house, paid off the Mortgage and bought a house in Melbourne (sea side) and still have money left over. '

Brisbane and Adelaide are the backwaters. WHO in their right mind would want to live there?

A couple of weeks ago they said there was only one Sydney suburb where a young couple on $80,000 per year had a hope of buying into. I had never even heard of the suburb.

Which "couple" only earns $80,000 a year? Most people in 2 working families are earning $110,000 +.

Regardless .... I really think that the "Australian dream" of a quarter acre block and a 3 bedroom, one bathroom house is long gone.

They ALL want a double storey, 4 bedroom, 2-3 bathroom, place these days.

Kids!!! IF they want to get into the housing market should buy a 1br unit ... or just RENT for the rest of their lives until they inherit their parents house, then they will spend most of it on TRAVEL .........

I grew up in Sydney (Sutherland Shire - one of the nicer parts, similar to Hornsby area) but wouldn't buy in Sydney even if I could afford it.
If I could afford it and had to be near/around/in Sydney I'd look around Bundeena or Maynbah - surrounded by Royal National Park, has beaches, and just a ferry ride across Gunnamutta bay/Port Hacking River to Cronulla.
If I couldn't afford it, but still had to be close to Sydney, I'd look 'round Helensburg and South Coast.

Then mount a rocket launcher on the bonnet of my car.
