I am all for people getting on.

What sort of world have we built where 1% has the wealth of the rest of the planet. The politics of money is the only power in the world now.

The wealth of the 1% richest people in the world amounts to $110tn (£60.88tn), or 65 times as much as the poorest half of the world, added the development charity, which fears this concentration of economic resources is threatening political stability and driving up social tensions.

It's a chilling reminder of the depths of wealth inequality as political leaders and top business people head to the snowy peaks of Davos for this week's World Economic Forum. Few, if any, will be arriving on anything as common as a bus, with private jets and helicopters pressed into service as many of the world's most powerful people convene to discuss the state of the global economy over four hectic days of meetings, seminars and parties in the exclusive ski resort.

Winnie Byanyima, the Oxfam executive director who will attend the Davos meetings, said: "It is staggering that in the 21st Century, half of the world's population – that's three and a half billion people – own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus."

I like the way Gates and Buffet deal with this enormous wealth and power. They feel the need to use it to better humanity. A very good thing. If they all did it there could be real progress.

That's because nowadays you need to be extremely wealthy to become a philanthropist. When the government wasn't stealing all our money, philanthropy and charity was not something that you had to set up a NGO that soaked up the charity to lobby the govt for taxpayer funds.

Yes, it is something the US rich have been doing for a while.

Outside the US the government doesn't want them to be too wealthy but doesn't spend the money wisely.

However, if the rich and powerful don't care for those not so well off, off with their heads will be the cry... as before.

Why would they? They're safe and secure at the top of the heap for the time being. Often it doesn't last. Philanthropy pays off for those who give though. They can actually enhance their wealth by giving some of it away, but few people understand the philosophy behind this. Once you give - you start getting more back. Some might say it's only a spiritual belief - but it could actually be physics.
