Halal food for Christmas in Aussie Jails

A Christmas menu of Halal chicken, cranberry sauce, potatoes and vegetables will be on offer for the increasing number of Muslim inmates behind bars at Australia’s super-maximum security prison.

A ‘religious-friendly’ menu will be available alongside a vegetarian option to suit the large number of terror-related criminals inside Goulburn’s Supermax prison.

The standard lunch menu, which includes ham, will be served to inmates convicted of crimes such as rape and murder – including serial killer Ivan Milat.

One of the newest faces in the facility is 18-year-old Raban Alou, who will spend his first Christmas behind bars this week.

Alou was locked up in October for allegedly supplying the gun that was used to kill police accountant Curtis Cheng outside a police station in Parramatta.

Earlier this year, six prisoners went on a 16-day hunger strike after their weekly allowance was cut from $100 down to $13 a week.

The inmates, all Muslim, claimed it wasn’t enough to purchase Halal meat, which costs $32 per week at the jail.

More and more muslims are filling our jails. Should they be provided with halal food? I say definitely not! Commit a crime here and get the same food prisoners have been fed here since the inception of the prison system and since when did prisoners receive an allowance?

Pretty soon everything we buy will be halal, to appease our 2%? Does that seem justified?

With 171 surveillance cameras put in place, inmates are monitored 24 hours, seven days a week.

Inside their cold and cramped cells contains just a bunk bed, a set of shelves and a toilet and sink.
Inmates are shuffled around to different cells every couple of weeks and have regular x-ray checks. Nine News reports it costs $550 a day to keep a prisoner at SuperMax.

'It is money that I would prefer to see the government spend on hospitals and schools but it is money to ensure the community in NSW is safe,' Mr Elliot said.

Jail appears to be a comfortable place in Australia. They're given free education, dental and medical services, which is more than they would get on the outside.

It's the arrogance of the Muslim inmates which upsets the average Australian. What they demand they get. We are so weak and compliant. The average Australian generally hasn't got that sort of demanding mentality and you couldn't imagine them insisting on steak and chips if they were imprisoned in a Muslim country.

I assume the community would be safe regardless of what food they were given. Those in SuperMax should be given any old slop. Some US jails have the right idea. I doubt they make an exception for the religious.

I dont think we should provide Halal food in prison. If they don't want to eat what the general population eat they can starve. At $550 a day we are spending over 200 grand a year on them.
If they riot throw them in solitary and give them Porridge and water. In fact our problem is that we are not doing that anyway. Anyone that commits a terror act here is saying they don't like our society and its privalages so we should remove any sense of privalage.

Yea of course, but I don't see why we have special diets for religious purposes.

Of course it includes a multiple of other services - guards, health and dental care etc. We are still too soft. It doesn't matter what their religion is in SuperMax - they should all be treated as the violent, perverted criminals they are. We could greatly reduce the $550 per day (and the rest) that it costs if we lowered our standards a bit for the very worst of these thugs. Something like this would probably bring it down to $50 a day.
