Most of us have heard about the development of violence on Manus Island PNG detention centre. I doubt too many people would want to swap places with the refugees who are locked up there. Some of the media reports have inferred that the locals don't want them there, but on the contrary - the deterrent camp has given employment to many Papuans.
Our government is using PNG police for enforcement and their methods of controlling crowds are a little different to ours. The refugees claim to be in fear of their life and you'd have to believe that. PNG isn't exactly hospitable. Reports state that 70 people were injured, one is dead and another in a critical condition.
Abbott stands by his tough stance, but will he buckle under pressure? We now have the PNG police chief demanding better conditions for the refugees and China questioning our treatment of these desperate people as well as concern about their illegal transportation to other nations.
Manus Island's police chief has blasted the Abbott government's running of the immigration detention camp on the island, suggesting the recent fatal violence could have been avoided.
Police commander Alex N'Drasal said the protests were sparked by the failure to act on a list of grievances raised by the asylum seekers. He said the Australian government should improve the way the detention centre is run.
...............
In a sign of lingering bilateral tension between Australia and its largest trading partner, China's Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Li Baodong, said he was concerned about the "very important issue" of the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, especially children, who arrive in Australia by boat.
"Indeed, we have proposed this question very candidly and also stated our concerns," Mr Li told reporters in Beijing. "We also asked if these refugees will be illegally repatriated to other countries."

It looks a bit like the Vortex.

So what would you do with violent rioters running around your country mantra?
And yes it is A DETENTION CENTRE. Which holds people that tried to get here using criminal means.

We can't blame the Papuans. Violence is all they're used to. I don't know what the solution is. The attacks occurred inside the compound.

Should we string them up maybe? Slice them to pieces with machetes? As long as they don't bother us - we're content. Detainment at Manus Island was Rudd's solution, so I bet he's breathing a sigh of relief that this didn't happen on his watch. On the other hand sweeping their misery and fear under the carpet and not allowing even an interpreter near them - isn't the right solution either. Ms. Bokton, the interpreter, was suspended by the government for speaking out on behalf of the refugees.
But local Manus Islanders have said local guards who worked for G4S were involved in the violence that erupted on Monday evening, which left one man dead, up to 13 seriously injured and many more with lesser injuries.
“They were police and local guards who work for G4S,” said a source on the island. “They fought the asylum seekers.”
And questions are now arising as to whether most of Monday night’s violence occurred inside the detention facility, rather than on the outskirts.
The detention centre is now in lockdown and asylum-seekers are no longer able to get messages out to refugee networks as they did in the immediate aftermath, where they claimed it was a bloody and unwarranted overreaction by local security forces that occurred inside the compound.

Manus Island, Australia's Guantanamo. Offshore and secret to but a secret few chosen by Tony Abbott.

Manus as a detention centre, now before the court.
