The federal government has commissioned market research contracts worth $4.3 million in its first five months in office, Fairfax Media reports.

It has two contracts with social media research firm Cubit Media Research to gauge public opinion of the government's immigration policies through Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

It's also spending $65,000 to track the mood on its "no boat no visa" campaign.
