The world already thinks we're stupid because we've got a PM who denies climate change. We are signed up to an EU ETS - so it's inevitable that we'll have one. I think it starts in 2016. We may as well do it now, rather than wait another couple of years. Carbon prices are cheap at the moment - although they will skyrocket as fuel becomes more expensive. I don't agree with an ETS and think it's going to be a rip off - trading on hot air, but the big boys have demanded it so Abbott will have to buckle eventually.

Shorten has to show some conviction.

What exactly did Mantra get wrong? Your emission control sceme IS based on the EU system and your country is expected to meet those new regulations in 2015. OI you... we? You mean the Labor Party and the Greens... Don't confuse Australians as a whole with a minority.
BTW our emissions scheme is based on a tax not a market based system. Only Greens hug trees.

Australia's ratification of Kyoto was one of the first acts of the Labor Government in 2007. Our willingness to join a second commitment period was widely welcomed at the Doha conference and provided impetus for progress at the talks.

The Kyoto Protocol was finally negotiated and concluded at the 3rd meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP-3) in December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, following a series of submissions by Parties to the UNFCCC and talks held by the Ad Hoc Working Group established after COP-1 held in Berlin, 1995. The Kyoto Protocol entered into force generally on 16 February 2005. Australia signed the Kyoto Protocol on 24 April 1998, but did not ratify until 12 December 2007 following the election of the ALP government. To date, 182 parties have ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

The Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Greg Combet and Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Mark Dreyfus today announced that Australia has signed up to a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol at the United Nations climate change conference in Doha.
