Should the bank gaurantee be rolled back?

Post by Leftofcentresalterego » Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:23 pm

While it may have been necessary at the time when it seemed that the world was about to go to hell in a handbasket, perhaps it is time to roll back the bank gaurantee?

Since the GFC, the big four have captured almost 100% ( up from around 50%) of the Australian mortgage market as other lenders have been squeezed out while the big four themselves were protected. This seriously declining competition will allow them to hike rates with a certain amount of impunity while the inevitable neo-liberal cry will be "see! we told you that government spending pushes up rates" - while conveniently ignoring the fact that it will be driven by reduced competition not fiscal policy.

Interesting idea- I haven't read anything on this. It has supposedly been a major stabilising influence on our economy as it kind of shields people from lack of credit as I understand it. You have a more technical analysis JM or Frogen?
