Will Abbott be given the flick?

Post by mantra » Wed Jul 17, 2013 9:46 am

Gillard and Abbott are both popular with their party - but not with the voters. Rudd and Turnbull are popular with the people but not with their party. It looks like the Libs might have to consider ditching Abbott and at the last minute switch to Turnbull. Of course it would be a very wise move, although perhaps they've left it a little late.
Liberal Party's best bet: switch to Turnbull
Many Liberals must be thinking their chances of winning a seat or holding on to one would be better were Turnbull reinstalled in the position he only lost by one vote to Abbott, primarily because Turnbull supported a market-based system to put a price on carbon emissions. However since then, while there remain pockets of scepticism about the degree to which human activity is contributing to climate change, more and more voters favour action that is based on putting a market-based price on carbon emissions.

By many accounts, Abbott is a decent, hard-working and intelligent man, but poll after poll suggests he does not resonate with voters. Like Gillard, Abbott is preferred by his colleagues, but not the voters. Like Rudd, Turnbull is preferred by voters, but not colleagues. Not yet.

Many politics aficionados might say it is fanciful to argue the Liberal Party should consider replacing Abbott with Turnbull, but should the polls continue to suggest the ALP could retain government, the idea of change could readily gain momentum. The Liberals have seen, and should be troubled by, the fillip the change to Rudd has given the ALP.

The only thing more painful to them than having to cut down an electorally unpopular but internally well-regarded leader would be spending the next three years in opposition.

Abbott's negative, attacking style ran out of puff months ago. I doubt they'd change leaders now - but while the polls are close speculation will be rife.

You are confusing the Libs with the shitful ALP.

When the Libs say they will go to the election with Abbott as leader, it is what will happen. Unlike the lying ALP, who have done nothing but spew lie after lie after lie...Gillard will lead us to the election...I will not challenge for the PM... We are united behind Gillard...Kevin is a psycho...there will be carbon tax under a govt I lead....global warming is the moral challenge of our time...we need a fixed price on carbon for stabilidy

You'd be better off speculating if Rudd will still be leader after the ALP lose the election or if Milne will get knifed by Rhiannon so the Greens can embrace their true communist roots.

We don't know who's going to win the election at this stage. If Abbott loses - then he will be given the flick and replaced with Turnbull, but it's quite possible that a good number of Libs will lose their seat at the same time. They are nervous.

The ALP are greedy - but so are the Libs. They like the food at the trough too.

No you idiot that is not how it works... The leader of the losing party if it is the Coalition will vacate the position. He/she is either reinstated or not, either by popular acclaim or in a spill if he/she even stands.

Turnbull is the ALPs favourite he is still not the Libs favourite. Hockey might be chosen instead. You seem to have a very short memory and forget Turnbull had a go and failed.

I doubt the Libs are as self serving and power hungry as the ALP have shown they are. They dumped Rudd and dumped Gillard and reinstated Rudd and their goal has been to hold onto power we Australians don't come into their thinking.

Yes - you halfwit I know. Just because I didn't use your wording - doesn't mean the end result won't be the same. Abbott wouldn't be returned under popular acclaim. Maybe you think they'll put Pyne or Hockey in as an alternative? They're really popular with the people.

Is Hockey popular? yes.

Is Hockey popular? yes.
More popular than Turnbull as a popular leader?

Yes that's right. I was trying to tell you nicely.
