In response to the surge in family groups, Mr O'Connor announced yesterday that families would be eligible for bridging visas and that the Curtin detention centre in Western Australia and the Wickham Point facility in the Northern Territory would be "reconfigured" to house families.

"This is done to ensure, as I say, a cost-effective means to maintain the network," Mr O'Connor said. "It's also done to ensure that we do not keep children in detention other than for mandatory requirements of health, identity and security."
