The GALP refugee program

A Tamil man living in Australia has detailed shocking claims of rape and torture at the hands of Sri Lankan army intelligence.

Last year almost half of the asylum seekers who arrived in Australia were from Sri Lanka, which recently emerged from 30 years of brutal civil war.

The Government has been sending Sri Lankans home, claiming the threat of war and persecution is over.

But one Sri Lankan Tamil living in Australia has told the ABC's 7.30 a very different and disturbing story.
How shocking eh? But wait...there's more that should send a shiver up skips spine... If he had one.
Kumar arrived in Australia in 2008. He fled Sri Lanka after being interrogated and accused of links to the Tamil Tigers.

I can't forget. No one wants to get these kinds of things in their life. I pray to God. No one must get this kind of punishment.
Kumar's family joined him in Australia last year. In March, he needed to return home as his uncle fell ill.

That's shocking IQ. How dare an asylum seeker ever return to his homeland over something as trivial as a dying relative?

I agree. What sort of asylum seeker goes back. :thumb

He should have put him on a plane and help him to apply for asylum in Australia and then Medicare (is it still called that) will look after him. He wasn't thinking straight.

On a serious note. 25 years ago I helped a Tamil seek residency in Australia and was happy to do so. It was the right thing to do. He was skilled, had a family and scared shitless of what was happening to his people. I guess unless you have lived it, you don't know how lucky we are compared to those that want to build a better life somewhere safe for their family.

The trouble for the west is that most of the world would come if the were allowed. We just don't have the room or the budgets to save everyone, particularly those that add not economic value to the society.

Picking the lucky winners is very difficult indeed.

With 80% of them still unemployed here after 5 years how can so many afford these trips back and forth to their homeland?

This wasn't his first trip back and he felt safe enough to go back to supposedly manage his uncle's restaurant this time. What were his other trips back for?

How many people flee for their lives from a country they say they fear yet continue to go back?

Doesn't add up, sorry!

Got a source for that?

Sort of begs the question, doesn't it? How many do visit their homeland? You make it sound like most of them.

I agree. Sounds like he was bullshitting, when he said he would be in danger if returned.

Yes, how many. We've got a count of 1 so far.

What about the Lebs who have gone back to fight in Syria? Sure some of them were born here but many came here as teens/young men. Classic example of loving everything about your home country other than living there.

I don't think Boxy lives in Sydney, so probably has no idea of what it is like now.

Last time I visited Sydney it looked like it had been invaded by Islam and Asians.... rarely saw a blond, Aussie in the crowds!

Canberra has a lot of Sudanese and only a few years ago you would barely see an Asian or dark skinned person at The Mall ...... they are, thus far, only mentioned occasionally as ATTACKING white females .... no age preferred I certainly would not walk around after dark!

There is no credible source. There was an opinion stating roughly those figures not long ago - written by Tony Abbott for the Australian, but there were no official figures to back it up. He might have been referring to the asylum seekers held in detention during the Howard years.

DIAC Report shows more than 80% of Refugee & Humanitarian Migrants on Benefits after 5 years.

A major Government survey showing high rates of unemployment and welfare dependency for refugee and humanitarian entrants reinforces the need to restore a strong border protection regime, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship and Settlement, Hon. Teresa Gambaro said Thursday.

“The official survey conducted for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and released on the night of the Royal wedding highlights that 83.5% of refugee and humanitarian entrants are still on benefits five years after arriving and less than a third have a job,” Mr Morrison said.

“The news is worse of refugee and humanitarian entrants from Afghanistan and Iraq that have dominated illegal boat arrivals, where only 9% and 11% had a job respectively,” he said.

“Low levels of employment, welfare dependency, lower income levels and poor English skills are a toxic social cocktail, that can lead to enclaving and serious intergenerational social problems.

“The results highlight why it is so important that we have complete control over who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come.

It seems I recalled incorrectly at 80%. The true figure was 83.5%. Feel free to find the official DIAC report yourself. It's out there.

Hmmm, I see what you did there. The figure is for "receiving benefits", and you attributed it to being "unemployed". I wonder if that includes children?
