Abbott staffer makes death threat

Why would a senior Tony Abbott staffer believe he was empowered enough to make such a threat? Is it because behind the scenes Abbott is a pugilist and therefore incites the same mentality amongst his staff? Not a good look.

A SENIOR Tony Abbott staffer threatened to "cut the throat" of an eminent Australian last night at the gala Qantas party, political commentator Peter Van Onselen has said.

Van Onselen, who witnessed the threat, told news.com.au a male, "very senior member of Abbott’s staff" told the prominent Australian, who works in the not-for-profit sector, he would "cut his throat" when "we" are in Government.

Van Onselen tweeted about the incident last night.

He said on Twitter that the staffer warned him to keep his mouth shut, in exchange for leaked information from inside the Federal Opposition Leader’s office.

"Abbott’s staffer knew I heard the conversation, bailed me up & offered to be a source inside TA's office if I stayed quiet ... thanks, but no," van Onselen tweeted.

Mr Abbott is holding a press conference at 10am where he is expected to answer questions about the incident.
Van Onselen, who is "totally disgusted" by what he saw, tweeted there was "much, much more to it", which he will reveal.

"I have heard some threats in my time, but nothing like that from an Abbott staffer tonight.

Asked about the incident on Friday, Mr Abbott said the staffer had denied threatening to cut the person's throat, but confirmed an incident had taken place.

''I understand there was an unfortunate exchange between a staffer of mine and someone at a dinner last night. The incident is out of character as far as the staff member is concerned,'' he said.

''It's been investigated, and I understand the staffer has apologised to the person with which he had the incident, and it seems that the matter is now at an end.

''The staff member in question has been counselled.''

Apparently after an investigation by Credlin the staffer has been demoted after he apologised to the man involved (he was also drunk, apparently). The apology was accepted and Van Onselen got the quote wrong... how unusual.

I await the latest update which may be yet another version.
