THE government-owned company rolling out the National Broadband Network has revealed it has hired 35 employees on the controversial 457 visa arrangement.
Despite the NBN Co having declared at the height of the debate over Enterprise Migration Agreements that its workforce development strategy was focused on growing a pool of skilled labour within Australia, the company has revealed in new answers to a Senate committee that it has got workers on the 457 visa.
Spokeswoman Rhonda Griffin said the positions "range from technical specialists through to senior management, bearing in mind that we have run global searches for some of our executives".
"This is less than 2 per cent of our workforce and therefore a very small contributor to employment," Ms Griffin said.
Bet it is much higher than 2% now...

I would have thought that this is a good thing to address skill shortages. Is there real evidence it is being abused on a wide scale? Or is to too early to tell.
On a temporary sponsored 457 visa, you will have limited rights, and restrictions while you are in Australia.
A skilled Permanent Resident visa can give full rights and zero restrictions on your life and work in Australia.

Illegal immigrants aren't skilled nor are they brought in on 457 visas and there is no evidence that the 457 program is being abused. 457 applicants are great for the country and very much needed.
There is, however ample evidence that illegal immigrants brought in on boats under the ALP are entering our society on welfare and molesting local women and children.
But guess who the ALP are raising as an issue to be addressed under the guise of "der taking err jerbs!"

I can see the argument for the welfare claim.
Cannot see the arguement for the molestation charge beyond a normal deviant distribution in all populations.
Are you saying there is a cause and effect here. If you are likely to choose to come illegally into Australia you have a higher than average probability of being sexual molestor.
Could it be that Aussie women are just so much more attractive than where they come from and wear very little compared to a full blown hijab. You know it's the fault of the women don't you.

If it happened to my wife or kids, I'd be hunting down Gillard and her immigration minister to dish out some rough justice. The minister is responsible legally for these people, but id put Gillard in my sights just because turning her hair a different shade of red would be a fun thing to do.
