ASIC seeks power to read your emails, texts
Is this a big issue at home.
There should be an uproar, if there is, I don't see it anywhere.
Do Australian's accept a police state.......?
" ASIC wanted the contents of communications stored, too." Watch out... this is going too far and must be opposed.
The Australian Securities and Investment Commission has called for sweeping powers so it can access phone call and internet data for its war on white-collar crime.
Not only does the authority want the powers to intercept the times, dates and details of telecommunications information; it also wants to access the contents of emails, social media chats and text messages.
This is more power than the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation have sought to assist the crime agencies in investigating terrorism and murder suspects.
....
But ASIC commissioner Greg Tanzer told a parliamentary inquiry in Sydney today ASIC wanted the contents of communications stored, too.

It does seem over the top and they'll have to employ a few thousand extra staff to monitor them, but there would be many crime syndicates in Australia. The crime squads could probably make a few more busts on drug smugglers, terrorists, murderers, scammers etc. if they had access to emails.

True. However I see the following issues.mantra wrote:It does seem over the top and they'll have to employ a few thousand extra staff to monitor them, but there would be many crime syndicates in Australia. 1. It is technologically difficult. It would cost too much and would be unmanageable.
2. Proper criminals, that is the real professionals, will work around this. They will use encryption technology or other technology. You will only catch the numpties with this or corporate criminals stupid enough to use work infrastructure for the their crimes. So it will not catch this big boys. This has been debated he in the UK 6 months ago.
3. It is a big invassion into our privacy. Do we trust big brother never to mis-use this information?
The internet is not designed to allow this to happen. It will not achieve what they hope it will.

I initially thought the same thing, but ASIC wouldn't have proposed this unless they believed it could make a significant difference to their conviction rate - which is pretty abysmal. They only have limited powers at present and this could be a step in the right direction. The Federal and State police would demand the same access if ASIC was granted it.Super Nova wrote: True. There has always been fair warning about disclosing too much information online.

Not just online but all communications.Mantra wrote:There has always been fair warning about disclosing too much information online.
Phone
Instant Messages
Voice Mails
Sites visited including what you posted
All electronic communciations
All to catch just a few.
I am sure they will get more conviction if they have every piece of detail about everyone and every interaction between people via technology.
Why stop there. I think the right solution is that everyone in the world has a communcation chip with a camera and voice recorded implanted at birth with immedate download to big brother. If the chip is removed you die immediately. That is the solution to meet their requirements. Also some thought control device that shocks you everytime you have a thought that is not compliant with the states doctorine.
Sound extreme. That's what they need to meet their real requirements and will be the future if the thin edge of the wedge is allowed to be implemented.

There is the argument that only those with something to hide should be worried about such intrusions.
Some examples:
- if someone called you a racist.....
- if someone called you homophobic......
- if someone called you anti Muslum.....
- if someone wanted to claim you supported xxxxx when you don't or have changed your mind.......
would you be happy with them providing as evidence a statement you posted/emailed/texted/spoke when your were 16 and that was 30 years ago?
Think about it. Would you like some ofthe things you have siad in a pub to your mates years ago when you were pissed to be raised years later.
