Car theft in Melbourne is now more than the rest of the country combined and it's affecting insurance premiums right across Australia.

Crime is out of control in Melbourne.

I have been a victim of serious crime in Melbourne - but not since 2003
when my place was burgled and I lost almost every valuable thing that I ever owned.
The cops never recovered anything even though it was all engraved
with my name on almost everything - in multiple places - right into the metal on some things.
One item was a brand new VCR costing over $1,000 - the top of the range at that time.
They took my entire stereo system - plug boards, cables, speakers and all.
I even gave the cops all the serial numbers.
They cleaned out my entire place with anything they could carry.
When I asked the detective if there had been any other burglaries in the area he said
he couldn't discuss that as it was subject to privacy rules -
whatever that is? - I wasn't asking for names and addresses -
he was no help whatsoever and overly secretive.
The cops don't care about burglaries and they asked if had insurance -
I didn't and they acted as though it was my fault somehow.
The total loss was between $5K and $10K.

I'm sorry that happened to you Bobby. It's a terrible violation. If this was in 2003 they've had plenty of time to clean things up ... and haven't.

I had a car stolen too before that - and they used it to destroy a cricket pitch at a sports park.
The cops got my car back but a week later the engine blew up and it had to be given to the wreckers -
the thieves had thrashed the shit out of the engine.
The insurance wouldn't pay as they don't cover engine damage from thieves.
