Abbott actually promoted carbon pricing and a carbon tax quite heavily, right up until he became opposition leader. He has done a backflip on both the economics and the science of climate change.

No. The party line at the time was an ETS, which Howard went into the 2007 election with. Abbott was disagreeing with Howard and saying that a carbon tax made more sense.

Would you care to provide info where he made a stand against the party line and went to the back bench over it.
The only thing Abbott said publicly re a "price on carbon" was that a tax would be simpler.
Other than that, he acquiesced to the Party policy and FOLLOWED THE PARTY LINE.

I did not say he was revolting. I said he was promoting a carbon tax as a better option. He would not have done that if he did not want it.

He described the science as crap, but he seriously thought a carbon tax was a better option. He promoted it for several reasons, not just his doubts about the science.

If you look at his more recent announcements, it appears that his direct action policy is only temporary. He has scheduled another backflip for 2015.
