Border Protection Command assists vessels

HMAS Melville, operating under the coordination of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Rescue Coordination Centre, has rendered assistance to a suspected irregular entry vessel that sought assistance east of Christmas Island last night.

Initial indications suggest there are 127 people on board.

HMAS Childers, operating under the coordination of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Rescue Coordination Centre, has separately rendered assistance to a suspected irregular entry vessel that sought assistance north of Ashmore Islands yesterday.

Initial indications suggest there are 72 people on board.

Border Protection Command will now make arrangements for the passengers from both vessels to be transferred to Australian Government authorities on Christmas Island, where they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established.

People arriving by boat without a visa after 13 August 2012 run the risk of transfer to a regional processing country.

'Serious breach'

WA Premier Colin Barnett has described the incident as a "serious, unprecedented and unacceptable breach of Australia's border security".

"It's a serious lapse and I simply cannot imagine how this could have occurred," he said.

"For a boat, in broad daylight, to have sailed onto the Australian mainland, in the south of the state and just blatantly sail into Geraldton, that is extraordinary.

"I think there needs to be some questions answered about that.
