Interesting hypothosis there. Are you claiming that subsistance farming is more efficent?freediver wrote:And remember, this is for a bunch of rich white people competing against dirt poor asians and Aficans. If we ever did run into trouble we could probably double our output just by putting a bit of effort into it.

You are not alone Frogen. But at least you admit it.J.W. Frogen wrote:You know Freebie, since I stopped caring about politics I stopped reading my own evidence.
It is glorious, like freeballing it or being in Congress.
No. I said the opposite. We would have to put a bit of effort into it. Under the current prices it would be a lot less profitable, but food prices would obviously be higher, so it could be more profitable. It could come down to how you define efficiency.boxy wrote:Interesting hypothosis there. OK, you put me off a bit with your "put a bit more effor into it" remark.freediver wrote:No. I said the opposite. We would have to put a bit of effort into it. Subsistance farming is the definition of "putting effort into it" farming. It's labour intensive. I thought you were suggesting that if needed, we could revert to labour intensive farming.
Our farming efficency isn't limited by "effort", but rather by technology and input costs. Captialism is good at being exactly as efficent as the market will allow.
We could probably gain a greater output of produce, by drastically lowering wages, and raising commodity prices, so that it became economical to have high labour input (at the lower labour price).
However, I don't see any other way to add extra "effort".

Labour is a very significant input cost. The percentage of our economy dedicated to farming keeps shrinking. Our farming efficency isn't limited by "effort", but rather by technology and input costs.
It would happen naturally. However, I don't see any other way to add extra "effort".
We actually should be reducing farm output by getting the US and EU to drop farming subsidies. This would be great for most poor countries. Except of course the overpopulated ones.

That's if there are any Australians left who are capable of doubling the input and will we have the farms left to do it? Farmers are deserting in droves whilst foreigners are scooping up the forsaken farms to feed their own nations. And remember, this is for a bunch of rich white people competing against dirt poor asians and Aficans. If we ever did run into trouble we could probably double our output just by putting a bit of effort into it.This year, the peak body will report that the industry -- which includes some personal care and medical products and excludes bulk grain and livestock -- will record a trade deficit for the first time since data was collected in 2003-04.

You keep bringing that up mantra. People keep offering you perfectly sensible responses. You ignore them every single time and just keep repeating it.
Is that why you call yourself mantra?

It's only the second time I've brought it up - the first time in another thread. If you consider yourself as giving sensible responses - then you'd be wrong.freediver wrote:You keep bringing that up mantra. People keep offering you perfectly sensible responses. You ignore them every single time.
Yes - so those who are thick can remember the message.......and just keep repeating it.
